to make him happy I added 'That said, it may very well form part of a musical piece.'...John Cage might have disagreed with you on this bit. But I think you are channeling his spirit here a bit more than most, overall.

A good musical education might.Nobody is going to change their thoughts on the matter.
I'm about to go to bed, but so much of what we think about this depends on how we define music and how we define what it is to be a musician. That will be different for every one of us. My definitions tend to be loose because of who I am and the things that have influenced the way I think about music. I think of music in terms of elements and sound, whereas others may define it as notes on a staff or positions on a fretboard and perhaps educational achievement. Who's right and who's wrong is anyone's guess if you think there's one right answer. but you're correct that no one is going to change their mind.We are in the hundreds, of threads and everybody has their interpretations of theory, "Rudiments", notes, composition etc etc. We are trying to explain but the interpretations are different. Nobody is going to change their thoughts on the matter. If you think a DJ is a musician Ok. I don't care. All I know their is music all around. us right now being manipulated by some form or another. I just pray that the one doing it walks me through the gates when its my time. Or do I have to explain what I mean about Gates.
Violent? If this is not a joke, your comment is extremely violent and unrelated to the subject. If this is a joke, it's a very bad one.![]()
Can you do any of that on a drum?Success does not equate with musicianship. Doh!
Can you easily play Twinkle Twinkle little star, or Old MacDonalds got a farm, or the Alphabet song or even Baa Baa Black Sheep on DJ equipment? If that's a stretch, how about Donna Lee? Autumn Leaves?
The DJ's equipment is a performance tool, regardless how adept they are.
I'm sure some DJs are very talented, and may be very musical, but they're not playing chromatic musical instruments.
The vast majority of music is realised with CHROMATIC instruments, OK, y'all?
Hah, call me old fashioned![]()
man i thought the Billie Eilish threads were the epitome of OK Boomer but i guess this one takes the cake
Who is cake?!...Enjoy you're cake (I bet it's poopie flavored)

Right, and what doofuses like you don't get is that Cage explicitly stated that the sounds the audience made; coughs, sniffles, rustling, mumbles, etc. were the sounds that made up the music. Therefore, any listener who chooses to put such sounds into a rhythm in their mind creates their own music. That's what made the piece so groundbreaking, not the fact that it was 4:33 of 'silence'.
Someone actually transcribed the noise(s) made by the audience at a performance of 4:33. I played that transcription once at a gallery gig. Really interesting experience, that!Right, and what doofuses like you don't get is that Cage explicitly stated that the sounds the audience made; coughs, sniffles, rustling, mumbles, etc. were the sounds that made up the music.
