Are my strings too heavy?

I was wondering if my strings are too heavy. I got my 4 string bass set up a few months ago, for C standard tuning, so i could get heavier strings and elimate the lose string tension and clank with standard gauge strings that were on it.

When I had my bass set up I also had the guy put on a 5 string set gauge 45-130. There is now less clank and tighter tension, but it is very hard to play now. I play fast death metal, and it is really tough pushing down on the frets and plucking when playing fast, especialy up higher on the fretboard on the lower notes. I also have to attack the strings alot harder then before and this is kind of a pain.

My strings are tuned C-F-B♭-e♭ What would be a balanced string gauge for this tuning?

I'd go for .125 for the C string. If you play with a pick, try a thin one. They bend nicely over the strings and allow fast playing without hitting the strings too hard killing the low punch. The harder you hit, the more clang and less growl you get.

But it's easy to determine by yourself, really. If the strings feel too tight, they are. Try lighter gauge and stick with what you like the best.
