Are pick slides on a bass a thing?

Used to put little short ones in between kick beats for a back spinning hip hop effect in a punk band I was in. Wouldn't fool anyone but we thought it sounded cool. Along with real stuttering on vocals and playing snippets of covers as samples.
Basically if you find a use for the sound, it's valid. If you're just doing it coz you can, it's questionable. If it impresses young ladies it's pretty much compulsory.

I've seen some really neat stuff via (side of) thumb and palm slides. Actually has a musical bent to it, not grating.

Well, besides all the bands I already mentioned...
Motörhead.
Beastie Boys. (pretty much every album from "Check You Head" onwards. Obvious standouts would be "Gratitude" , and "Sabotage")
Muse.
NIN.
The Melvins.
Shellac. (more grindy, than flat out distortion, but check "The guy who invented fire")
The Stranglers / The Who / Unwound / Morphine / The Rolling Stones (file under hairy, and driven, rather than full on distortion).
Honestly, there are literally thousands of artists, in almost every genre that have tracks with killer distorted bass - this is just the ones that immediately popped into my head. If I looked at my record collection I could fun dozens of examples. If I spent a couple of hours scouring the internet for ideas, there are literally hundreds of thousands of tracks with great distorted bass sounds).
Nebula, Kyuss, Sleep, All Them Witches - stoner metal seems to usually have distorted bass.

The latest Stones record has McCartney on fuzz bass onna choon.
And yeah, Albini's bands (Big Black, Rapeman, Shellac) always seemed to me to feature distorted bass.
I can recall a local (Chi) band back in 90's had a great lead guitarist who we tried to do a shot every time he did a pick slide- would get bombed in about 3 songs and it was awfully annoying.
FWIW, I play guitar and on both that and bass I often use such slides as a matter of time-fill, often when coming out of a solo - I don't even think about it, just happens.
