Are shorts ever okay?

If you were in Carcass then about 75% acceptability.

We allow for shorts when it's hot outside. I think the only people that may care (if any) are other musicians. Guarantee you 95% of the people there will be in shorts/sundresses/skirts. 25% of the people may actually play close enough attention to the band to notice what you're wearing.
I'm almost sixty and I cannot recall even once caring what any band was wearing. That said, maybe there're better tips or bonuses when better dressed 'cause it seems to be a thing with musicians.

Agreed, all sneakers should be all black. That way they double as dress shoes.
The trick is finding ones without an obvious logo. Suitable for 'business casual' around the office, and can suffice with suit or blazer & slacks. They're a must for conventions and similar large meetings.

Footwear, and clothing in general, became much simpler after I returned to consulting.

Yes they can be ok, but as some pics in the thread illustrate, proceed with caution. It's far too easy to look durpy with shorts onstage.

For the Golf Tournament, I would say no, don't wear shorts. White, light fabric pants if you're concerned about temps. Because what goes with the shorts question is the shoes question. At a Golf Course gig you want to be wearing decent shoes, IMO.

I don't think shorts should ever be worn onstage with sneakers, white socks, that kind of look. Shorts are for situations where you can go barefoot or wear sandals. Don't go onstage looking like an American tourist. (You might get mugged lol).

I loves me some Hot Pants!

FWIW I recently travelled to Texas and got to experience some real heat and humidity combined, not fun! Hats off to all you guys that go out and play in those conditions - Rock those shorts!
