im going to buy a jazz bass, but i cant afford a fender jazz bass, someone told me about sx basses, and well they look good, but the price is sooo low, so i mean the arent good basses, but, many people use them, are they good?

Their price/performance ratio is very low. In other words, you will recieve more than what you paid for. They are really good basses for the price.

I don't know what the other threads say but they can need alot of setup ..
intonation .. nut might need filing quite an amount .. if you get a 5 string like I did the bridge is a little off in placement but you'll cope as its not huge
neck will need a trus rod adjustment as well .. and possibly quite a big one
they actually have good pickups in them though .. but the pole peices stick out which really gives me the heaby jeabys and no resale value at all ..
I can feel the rocks being pelted at me now .. but fender basses aren't all that and a bag of crisps .. its just that people believe they are the only option .. look on flea bay for an old ibanez or a yamaha .. you won't need to do all the setup and you will have something with some resale value .. you'll really be suprized by yamaha .. although I've never owned one I have lusted after a few
so unless you get an sx cheap and I mean cheap .. i'd look elsewhere
I got mine cheap and its my under the desk at work bass .. sound is good but playability is up there with my very first canora bass

Very good bang for buck. With some easy mods like new pickups, new tuners, etc, they can be on par with Mexican-made or even American Fenders in the feel, looks, and tone departments (not resale values). YMMV.
The only problem is that the Fenders only come in J's and P's.
I need my P/J's and 5-string fretlesses man!

I'd have to find a lefty MIM Fender 5-string, then still pay even more money and to convert it fretless. If I went that route I'd be in a different price range of quality. Or I can pay $100 for an SX with a 5-piece neck and a quality comparable to MIM's.
Though I don't get it when people compare them to MIA's, even upgraded ones. That's out of the SX ballpark.

Now to the OP, I am very happy with all 3 of my SX's. Though one has a swapped neck, one is a ongoing project and one is pretty much bone stock except for a replacement pick guard and strap locks.
The basses I modded were by choice, not need. All basses, IMHO, can benefit from a good setup. And a fret job is not a real bad idea for any sub 500 dollar bass, though, as Scott in Dallas will tell you, though the neck I sent him was a good one, itis great one now that feels as good as any 1000 dollar bass I have handled.
Aside from the fact that I have never had any formal training, have only been hacking away at mine for about a year, still stink as I barely play an hour a day, my SX basses are all I can ask for in a bass!
Many here gig regularly with their SX's and a few record with them, not too shabby for a 100-180 dollar bass, huh?
As to resale, jeez, say you paid 110 for the bass, and can probably re sell the sodding thing for about 75 dollars, how is that bad?

Now keep in mind when buying instruments of this caliber that quality IS NOT as consistent as with higher end products. Occasionally you'll find a lemon.

Grab one if you want it. They are certainly cheap enough so that if you decide it sucks you aren't out much. Even if you take a bath on reselling it, you still won't lose that much. I've only played three SX's in my time. Two briefly then a third where I was able to tweak the setup to try and make the sucker play better. Take my comments with that in mind. I haven't spent as much time with them as others have.
I personally wouldn't buy one. I completely do not understand the comparison to MIA fenders. Not remotely comparable. Quite frankly, the average MIM fender is a noticeable step up from SX from what I've seen. With used MIM's going for just a touch more than SX's, that's where I'd look for a budget beater.

A used MIM will run you nearly twice what a new SX costs, and will probably need as much set up work to be a really good player.
As to the MIA comparison... with some proffesional fret work, and a few mods, they can run all day long with, and in many cases surpass, an MIA. Believe me. I've owned and played American Fenders for years. If you offered me a straight up trade for brand new MIA Fender for my no.1 SX, I'd turn it down. No lie.
