I'm a hack but I probably compensate with experience.
That, and the fact I'm a "big" fish in a small pond. Or just a fish in a pond full of polywogs.

I'm somewhere beneath a hack .....However....Polywogs.....Wonderful word......Say it out loud and it cheers you up!

I'm probably a hack. I can't play what people expect me to play 100% right. Not the best groove, sloppy timing, miss the downbeat more often than not.. I have a good ear for bass lines and don't get lost in the music though so I guess that makes me passable.
Also, I have the most wonderful music in my head
My moto is I don't care to be the best player, I just want to be myself.

On a good day I consider myself a little bit above average, mostly because in addition to a decent understanding of rhythm, chords, modes, etc, I sing as well. Really, though, as a musician I consider myself a glorified trained monkey.

I'm not even a musician, i'm just a machinist who is also a (mostly) self taught hack on bass. Unfortunately for the world in my part of it, i keep gettjng calls from people to play bass in bands ranging from post british invasion blues rock to hillbilly string/jug bands. I prefer first generation electric blues and fresh off the high lonesome mountain tunes.

I can't read real music and know nothing of the things it takes to be a pro player. I've learned enough nashville numbers to be dangerous and my dad and i have a method we use so he can send me documents and i can learn the songs so we can play them together the next time we get together.

Other than that i can't help but look at anything and not start figuring out how it was manufactured, how many man hours required, cost of material, etc, etc.

same here, music lover who plays bass in a band that just jams and writes original music that hasn't played out in 5 years. We used to but no drummer, no gigs. We have loads and loads of material, more than we have time to make into full songs and learn at the moment.

I'm the keyboardist's excuse to focus on pronunciation and progression rather than on the bass side of the keyboard.

I think it's worth it.

I also think that if the drummer picked up the bass, then I could make him as believable a bass player as I am within 15 minutes.
