Are you a string swinger?

Yep. I love trying new and different strings. My favorite rounds are DR Pure Blues, my favorite flats are TI Jazz Flats and my favorite tapewounds are D’Addario Tapes.

So I’ve got my favorite make and model of the three most common string types, but I still love experimenting with strings I’ve never tried before. I would never buy another bass again if I could have unlimited money for string purchases.

Been on GHS Precision Flats since the eighties, had a set of brite flats from years ago, I installed them last week and went to visit my son. When I got back I tried the bass again. The Precision flats went right back on. I don’t think I’ll stray again

I haven’t had a set of flats on one of my basses in over 47 years now. That said, I bought a new amp a few months ago, and may want to try a set of flats for research purposes only..

I like all my strings as bright and twangy as I can get them. But I do keep three basses: one for rounds, one for flats, one for tapewounds.
Rotating the three basses is a lot easier than changing strings all the time (though I still have a few more various sets to check out, so it's not like I am done buying strings altogether...) :thumbsup:

I‘m kind of starting to now, and I’m afraid to let this genie too far out of the bottle.

When I was young, it was whatever strings I could afford every 4-6 months. Those were always rounds, probably EB slinkys?

Then I went to flats. I wanted that old school sound, and buy once cry once price. Only had one bass for years.
More recently I’ve been putting flats on every bass I own, tried a few brands and kinda like them all…but I noticed all my basses kinda sounded the same.

Roto flats or rounds?

A few weeks ago I put roto rounds on my pbass, and to my horror I’m kinda liking it!!! Sounds like a p still, but gets those aggressive sounds I couldn’t coax out of it when it had fender flats on it.
I’ve got a set of half rounds sitting in a drawer now. Not sure I’ll put them in the p when these rotos die, like I originally planned, or if I’ll get really nuts and put them on my fretless telebass.

I used to laugh at people who used flats, and it took me many years of being goaded until I tried them. It took me another couple of years to try various brands of flats before discovering TI Jazz Flats. For nearly 20 years I’ve used very few other brands / types of strings. Last year, after listening to the hype, I tried EB Cobalt Flats and they were completely underwhelming. A couple of months ago, I put some DR Bootzillas and so far, I really like them, although I’ll probably go back to Jazz Flats before too long

Nope. I want high and balanced tension, so that limits my string choices to d'Addario and Kalium. I also can't justify buying more basses. So I have just two which cover as much ground as possible: a Fender (PJ) strung with Chromes, and a Jackson fiver (HH) strung with stainless steel Kaliums.

Though if I could get flats up to .148 gauge, I seriously think I'd abandon rounds forever.

Love reading all the pure nickel love in this thread. :)

On a swinging whim, I recently tried a set of GHS Balanced Nickels on a P-Bass = heaven under my fingers and especially in my ears. These strings are fantastic... smooth and deep, seem to get better with age. I thought I had my regular string with D'Addario NYXLs (nickel allow around a hex core)... and while they're still great strings, I have a new favorite right now. :D

I haven't tried the DR Pure Blues yet... but would love to see how they compare.

My favourite pure nicker are old Fender 7150 with golden silk. Sound not too mellow but lively tone compare to DR pure blue.
