Are you using a VPN yet?

Googling vpn services and their features, BitTorrent is frequently mentioned as a primary reason for using vpn. Also for accessing Netflix and similar services from countries where those streaming services are not normally available or have limited content. Neither of those apply to me.

I don't search for porn or bomb making instructions or how to join ISIS.

What else should I be worried about? ;)

Did you see Invalid Link Removed when you searched? It has some other reasons why a VPN is useful.

...Thanks to the Senate, ISPs can now continue doing these things as much as they want, and it will probably be years before we can do anything to stop them.
  1. Sell your browsing history to basically any corporation or government that wants to buy it
  2. Hijack your searches and share them with third parties
  3. Monitor all your traffic by injecting their own malware-filled ads into the websites you visit
  4. Stuff undetectable, un-deletable tracking cookies into all of your non-encrypted traffic
  5. Pre-install software on phones that will monitor all traffic — even HTTPS traffic — before it gets encrypted. AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have already done this with some Android phones.

So far, no VPN here. Here's an article on VPN's. One take-away is that not all VPN's are 100% secure, and some are fake.

Nobody needs privacy until they do. At one time, the people in the Netherlands saw no reason why their religion shouldn't be on their birth certificate.

Thanks to the good ole politicians and this decision to remove privacy, I've setup my home router to use L2TP through a service called ExpressVPN - service allows you 3 devices per account and is $12.99 per month - for keeping my information secure from the ISPs, which btw all have claimed they won't sell any information, for now at least, the $13 a month is well worth it.

I've pretty much gotten away from ads, between having a decent set of blockers installed in my browser, and avoiding abusive websites. Can I eliminate them completely? Probably not. But it's like locking my bike. There's no lock that can't be defeated by a determined thief, but at least I can park next to someone with a cheaper lock on a more expensive bike. ;)

So long as the adtech industry has other sources of income, I just have to make it slightly more inconvenient for them to come after me.

I'd be interested in honest no BS reviews here of these VPN services. Particularly with regard to speed for streaming services like Netflix; reliability; and (in)convenience.

Years ago I tried Anonymizer. It was awful. Dropped connections, extremely slow. Maybe these services are better now.

This site was recommended in the article I linked above:

Reading ExpressVPN's TOS, they have the right to monitor your activity if they suspect you're doing something prohibited by their TOS. Pretty much everything we're not supposed to do for legal or ethical reasons via any interwebs activity is prohibited in that TOS. So for example if you're downloading hundreds of gigabytes of music or videos they can look at what you're doing. TOS allows it.

"you may be held responsible for any and all damages incurred by ExpressVPN, including any amounts charged by any outside entity due to said (TOS) violation(s), including without limitation attorney’s fees and costs."

Just sayin'.
