Louis Johnson recorded Billie Jean on his red Yamaha BB. Quincy Jones always favored the BB in studio and on stage, once it came on the scene.
I’ve seen a lot of live music performances by some of my favorite musicians. Big stages, stadiums, churches , out door venues, and small up close intimate venues.
For the best bass sounds, 3 stand out . All were in smaller settings.
Small venue called The Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton . A few Valentines weekend back. Can’t remember the band name but the bassist had my ear all night on his Fodera Emperor 5. My jaw dropped at his sound.
Small church service almost 30 yrs ago. Full choir and full band with horns . Bass player on his Ken Smith 5 is punching through the mix. No slapping . Just fingers and finesse.
Another small venue called Jazz Tastings.
The bassist is playing 2 identical OG all black Yamaha BB3000’s. One fretted and the other fretless. Wow!!! Another jaw dropping moment. If I didn’t know any better , you couldn’t tell me those basses weren’t active. Such clarity, punch, richness with a dash of sizzle to the notes.
Those OG Yamaha BB’s with Ebony fingerboards and those great passive P/J set up have something special going on.
