Argument in store over used bass

Scored an awesome deal on a used Epipone Goth Thunderbird for $89!

Went in a local store I hadn't been in in forever cause its 45 miles from my house.

As I was checking out the used section it caught my eye and sure enough $89!

The store had a ton of used gear,sales guy said they had been stock piling for the holiday season and just put it all out.Literally guitars stacked 2 and 3 deep leaning against each other.

So I pull it out plug it in and start playing.As I'm playing I see another bass standing behind two others I wanted to try.I literally get up set the T-bird against the amp,still plugged in,amp still on and move one of the guitars.I'm talking I was maybe 4-5ft away from the T-bird.

That's when captain dbag comes up behind me picks up the T-bird and says "$89 oh this is coming home with me."

So I turn to the guy and say "What are you doing? I'm playing that."

Then the argument ensues.I reached out and grabbed it.So now me a dbag are both holding onto the T-bird.Sales guy hears us and walks over and ask if there is a problem.

I explain while still holding on to the neck that I was playing it and had set it down,still plugged in,amp still on and took 3 steps,moved one bass trying to get to another that I wanted to try and dbag walked up and grabbed the T-bird saying he was gonna get it.

Dbag said he walked up and it was just sitting there.Which is even more bs cause the store I was in all the bass amps and basses are all on one aisle and its a dead end aisle of which I at the end.So there is no way dbag couldn't have saw me with it or lean it against the amp.

So sales dude ask us if we needed the manager.Me and dbag argued back and forth a few times and sales guy walked off,I'm assuming to get the manager.Second or two after he did dbag let go of the bass and was like "Man I don't even need that pos." and let go and walked off.

It pissed me off to no end and afterwards sales guy and manager apologized.I told them its not their fault guy was being an epic dbag.

Anyway,I got the best deal ever even if it did require putting up with dbag.The T-bird is great!Few scratches on the back of the head stock.Couple of dings here and there.Plays fantastic.Does have a slight fret buzz on the 17-19 frets on the g string but I thinks its just a setup problem I gotta work out,no big deal.For $89 I can handle that.

Ok the store I was in all the bass and bass amps are on one straight dead end aisle.I was at the very end of the aisle using one of the last amps.So anyone going down there would see all the way to the end.They would see me playing the T-bird and would have seen me get up,and lean it against the amp,with it still on and plugged in.Take 2 steps and reach for another bass.

It was still in use.He might as well have just came up and grabbed it outta my hands while I was playing it.

It wasn't in use. You put it down. You don't own it. I have never been to a guitar store that didn't have at least a couple guitars or basses plugged into an amp just sitting there. Sorry, but it's far worse behavior to think that anything you were playing is automatically yours even after you put it down.

He couldn't have picked it up if you were using it. You weren't using it- you put it down. You don't seem to be getting that putting the bass down means anyone else is allowed to pick it up, and it's not yours anymore unless you pay for it. I taught my daughter when she was four to not get out of line or she would lose her place. That applies to everything.

By putting the bass down, still plugged in and leaning against an amp, the assumption is that you're a generally inconsiderate person that doesn't put things back where they belong when you're done with them. Not that you found a steal of a bass that you planned on purchasing. You could have unplugged it and taken it up to the register and told the guy you were going to buy this but you want to try some other stuff.

If I see a bass that is leaning against an amp that is plugged in and the amp is still on with someone standing two ft away from it on a dead end aisle with no one else on it then I personally wouldn't go run and pick it up cause it is clearly either still being played or someone just forgot to put it back up.I would atleast ask the only other guy on the aisle standing right next it if he was using it/testing it/comparing other basses to it.Especially when I see the only other guy on that aisle moving a bass out of the way in a situation that's looks like he might be doing so.

I had a similar experience with a Roland chorus pedal, one of the older sweet sounding models. In my case the guy who was trying it out literally left the store, so I picked it up and bought it, he came back 20 minutes later all indignant. I think if you put it down it's fair game, sorry dude, though you got the bass anyway. I think you should just count yourself lucky and call it good.

Sure, a considerate person would have asked if you were using it because it was near you. The guy isn't automatically a dick just because he picked up a bass you weren't holding, though.
