What about when someone alone at a crowded bar, with nobody to watch his stuff, has to go to the bathroom. Is he not entitled to get his seat back?It wasn't in use. You put it down. You don't own it. I have never been to a guitar store that didn't have at least a couple guitars or basses plugged into an amp just sitting there. Sorry, but it's far worse behavior to think that anything you were playing is automatically yours even after you put it down.
