Arnold Palmer RIP

He passed today at 87. Go look at a young picture of him. In his prime, he had forearms like Lou Gehrig, or some other HOF slugger. He was a real athlete.

Dr. C... I basically live in 'Golden Bear' country, and I have always felt that between the two, Arnie was the most relatable. That swing and head cock of his, always got me... and he still delivered! RIP, Mr. Palmer...

I took up golf in the late 1980s, and in order to learn how to play the game I went to the library and borrowed a golf instruction book by Arnold Palmer. I learned how to properly grip a club, the stance, the swing, putting, the whole shebang! So I can say with complete confidence that Arnold Palmer was my first golf teacher.

RIP, Arnie. Thanks for the lessons and thanks for the memories.

There is a picture of Arnold Palmer hanging behind the bar at a local golf course I frequent.(the course opened about 1962 or so) It depicts him in mid swing on the 10th hole of the course,1967. He was playing an exhibition match against two local pro's. There is a par 5 hole on the back nine that has a crazy dog leg right. The hole plays 510 yds if you go all the way around...however, the green is reachable from the tee, about 270 yards, if you cut over the corner and hit it really high over the trees. Palmer was the first player to go for it and hit the green. Remember it was 1967- have you ever seen equipment from the '60's?
For the next 20 year everyone who played that hole thought about going for it, many tried, majority of them failed...especially since the trees keep getting taller and wider over the years. It is now unreachable because of that but people still talk about it.
Palmer was THE man!

You don't need patience, just a high threshold for frustration and a rich scatological vocabulary.
In the same way I own a bass and an amp but do not call myself a bass player, I own clubs and pay greens fees, but don't call myself a golfer.
For Arnie, golf was not about him, he was about it being for everyone else. That is the true mark of a King.
I will miss you Arnie.
