Ashdown 410T arrived!!

My Ashdown MAG 410T bass cab arrived during the week, so got to collect it today.

Beautiful looking cab, love the blue speakers!! :D

Set it up with my SWR Workingmans 2004 (plan is to upgrade that in a few months) and tried it out. First impression, great bassy sound, sounds pretty much the way I hoped it would. :bassist:

One thing though... my bass head, the SWR WM2004, is rated 200W@4ohm, 160W@8ohm. The cab is rated at 450W, 8ohm, and was the only cab attached to the head. The bass I've tried it with is my Tanglewood Rebel 4K passive bass.

I fully expected the cab to take anything and everything the head could throw at it, but if I push the master volume up much past 12 o'clock and play an open E I'm getting some cracking/farting. All dials are at 12, gain, bass, treble, mids, master volume, I slap an open E and it crackles like a so & so.

Its kinda similar to what I was getting with my SWR WM 1x15 when the tweeter was kaput (been waiting for a new tweeter in the shop for about a month now if not more) but not quite as bad.

Should I be thinking about bringing it back into the shop for it to be checked out, or is this probably the farting that 4x10s tend to do anyway (from my reading through the forums)? and

And should I be worried that after the 1x15's tweeter went that another one might have blown when using it with the same head for the first time?

Kev.

The reason it is farting is probably due to you pushing all the 180 watts into it.

I doubt there is anything wrong with your cab, there just isn't enough headroom or power from the head to give your cab alot of good clean sound.

Get a new head with at least 450-600 watts to really opener her up .

Just out of interest did you buy this from House of music across from the Opera House.

Hmmm... the gain was at 12 (12 o'clock is about half), same for master volume, and all the bass, mids & treble were at 12 too. Surely I'd have to have at least the master/gain up a fair bit higher than that to be pushing the full 160W into it?

I didn't get that kinda noise with those settings on the 1x15.

Thats the place alright! Shipping took a while but got here eventually.

Another Corkonian, you in a band?

Thanks for replying. The reason I asked is I have a QSC RMX poweramp on order from there since the middle of May. When I last went in to pay more on the deposit they mentioned that a Ashdown 4x10 had been ordered and that a pallet was going to be shipped from Germany. I guess my power amp never made the trip.

At the moment I'm not in a band. Untill recently the gear I had was complete rubbish or broken. I use to have an Aria Pro 2 that sounded like mud no matter what amp I used it with, and when I asked other players to try it , it sounded just as bad. My amp an Ampeg SVT400T has been giving trouble since I can remember and I don't know anybody able to repair it. I've being trying to buy an Ampeg SVPCL and QSC RMX for the last couple of months but everything seems to be going wrong. It seems to be impossible to buy decent equipement in Cork. So no gigs for me until I got a usable rig.

Good luck with the Ashdown. I hope it gives you many years of good service.

Thanks...

the music shops in Cork are pretty chronic alright... No range of gear (so you can't try anything out apart from the 2 or 3 in stock) and as you say repair places few and far between.

I ordered the Ashdown around a month ago I think... They said they can get stuff shipped from Germany in 4 days but didn't mention they waited for a few weeks until the pallet was full! Ah well, got here eventually but you wouldn't want to be in a rush. You might think about ordering directly from Invalid Link Removed

Might Soundtrax repair amps, or at least know somewhere that does? Or maybe Disco2000 (place off Anglesea street, behind the new offices/apartments), they rent gear too. There used to be a place that repaired amps on coburg street, dunno if its gone or still there though, tronics something or something tronics I think it was.

Still not sure on the Ashdown cab, I think I'll give them a buzz and ask them what they think.

I agree: 160 available Watts that aren't being driven to the max shouldn't make this cab break sweat, never mind producing strange cracking noises. I suspect your SWR head has a fault. Is there any way you can test the cab using another amp that you know to be working 100% OK ?

If your last cab suffered a damaged tweeter, it could well be because this SWR amp is putting out nasty hi-frequency peaks. If I were in your shoes, I'd avoid using that amp at all until you've had it checked/repaired. Certainly don't run it into your new cab any more, or you might lose the tweeter on that one as well!

Thanks for the names of places to try and get gear repaired.

I'm getting sick of the House of music. I went in there this afternoon and was told that my poweramp wasn't on the pallet. Another order for a pallet may hapen in two weeks. They need to contact Rockshop to find out whats happining with the power amp. Yes Cork is a disaster for buying gear. If you don't want Peavey, Yorkville or EBS your out of luck. Dont bother asking anyone about Sadowsky or Bergantino gear, they'll look at you like you've got three heads. The attitude in Cork seems to be if it turns on without exploding and it makes a noise it's good enough. Don't say you care about the quality of sound. Thats an alien thought to most shops. People on this forum complain about the like of Guitar Centre. Spend a week looking for gear in Cork and Guitar Centre looks like heaven.

End of rant.

Update... got my Schecter bass out (active) and tried with that and no probs, pushed the max vol way up and no cracking/farting. I used a different lead with it too, Monster cable which I reckon are probably better than the others I tried.

I think its either the setup or electronics of the Tanglewood... Ah well, happy out now its working well! :) :bassist:

Phew! so often the solution is in the last place we'd ever think of looking. :D
