Ashlee Simpson must be stopped.

Ok, so I saw this travesty this morning.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=K5UoVKV1VsY
Now, based on what you just endured...if you're under 16 and have no frame of reference, I assume you'd think she was ripping off Gwen Stefani. (more like riding her coattails...)

But no. Her handlers MUST have been thinking "Geez, when this girl was TRYING to sing, as in semi-real pop pap from a couple years ago (read: "pieces of me", etc), she couldn't sing. So what can we mush her into where she doesn't have to sing? OH YEAH! Bad 80's music. Thing is, this bimbo isn't even a child of the 80's, and what's worse, is reviving what was worst in the 80's synth pop genre: the Toni-basil, 3rd rate Cyndi Lauper / Missing Persons stuff...thing is, it's so trite, even her NON singing sounds ********. It's so forced, and face it... that short-lived 80's revival (thnk Killers & the Bravery) is about two years ago too late honey...so I just don't even understand what she is trying to gain with this except for mockery. But it's not even endearing in that sense, like a Weird Al Yankovic type thing...no... Believe it or not, there WAS good music in the 80's. Ashlee, face it, your career is spinning around in the toilet, right along with your sister's...Daddy must be SO proud!

And look at that video. What a bunch of tired 80's references...come on, a Rubik's cube? Didja notice the rubik's cube, for all it's rotating never gets solved? It's because the maker of the video has no clue, just like Ashlee's handlers.

Hang it up already...that was NO way for me to be awakenned at 5:00 this morning. Between this idiocy, and the fact that corporate music industry has no clue where to turn, I hope this whole farce caves in on their collective heads and takes Timbaland and most other music "producers" down with it.

Music is art, not product...jeez. Music for ringtone's sake. Kill me now.

OK, so stop paying attention and focus on something real, like Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell! , for example.

I d/l'd the "Letters to Joni" album, which somehow had missed my notice before the Grammys (which I always REFUSE to notice, except their thrust in my face repeatedly on any radio or TV "news" show there is).

I love Joni Mitchell. I love Herbie Hancock.

Hancock covering Mitchell?

Excelsior!

Buffalobass, I hear you...but, didja miss the part where I said I was awoken to it at 5 this morning? My Wife left the toob on and that was what I saw and was in disbelief when it ended....so I made an observation....sorry for sharing folks.

And I wasn't dissing on Cyndi Lauper OR Missing Persons, I love them both...but, for example, "Ooo She Bop" was not a highlight in Cyndi's career...and that is where I was going with that. In Ashlee's case, it's a moot point, because she doesn't write her own material, so I don't think she will ever rise above sad sack novelty tripe.

I know it's old news people, this just rubbed me the wrong way is all, and I posted...thought that was a welcome thing here.

And Guitfiddle, preach it brother. CHURCH!

You can't blame Ashlee Simpson or her label for capitalizing on an ignorant public. With illegal downloading at epidemic levels, record labels are forced to push this kind of thing - music that the are sure will actually sell. Since labels can't afford to take risks on cutting edge artists anymore, they have to go where the money is, and that is in insipid pop music for 12 year olds.

Throughout all of history, there has been good art, bad art, and "art" that is made strictly to make money. Nothing has changed, except that "art" to move product is more insidious and obvious than ever before.

If it makes you feel any better, Ashlee Simpson won't even be a minor footnote in history, while great artists will be remembered long after they are gone.

Ben, I appreciate and agree with and realize everything you've said, and it needed to be said...

but just to clarify, this thread was just musings on something that hapenned to me this morning...yeah, I just found this one instance sad, because this girl in her constant attempts to reinvent herself after countless ridicules and misteps keeps on going along with what appears to be a course of action set to ensure her quick demise. I know she's under contract or whatever and to a point must do what she's told in order to continue (which in itself is sad) working....but I just wonder if at any point she herself paused, for even a nanosecond, and thought to herself "this is a really bad move".

:smug:

"the fact that corporate music industry has no clue where to turn, I hope this whole farce caves in on their collective heads and takes Timbaland and most other music "producers" down with it."

I still stand by this statement.

I don't know why Ashlee is such a target. JayLo can't sing very well, neither can Nelli Furtado. And some people who can sing, sing crap like Gwen S.. And when it come to guy bands, most of them can't sing. Why is that OK for them but not Ashlee. At least Ashlee is easy to look at.
