Hey guys,
I just stumbled across a blackface Ashly SC-40 preamp for sale locally for a pretty low price and was interested in it for the 3-band parametric eq. I run a GK MB Fusion and a Hartke LH1000 and thought about using it for some extra tone shaping for both. Is there anyone still using these things and how do they hold up to modern preamps and eq's (I currently have a Paradriver for some mid shaping and a little grit)?

I used one for years, although with a power amp. I think it's one of the best bass preamps ever made, simple controls, built like a tank. Many are still going strong. As an addition to an already existing EQ, I don't know. That would be too many knobs for me ! But, on it's own, a very effective preamp for bass.

Just curious, how would you describe the tone?

Well, it's been awhile since I last used one, but, the words, " solid " and " chunky " come to mind. I remember it having a nice, low mid thump to it, but, that may be what I wanted out of it and set it that way. Warm would be another word I would use. Not a real modern sounding preamp, but, I never really tried to get that kind of tone from it.
