Assistance need [Amp set-up] - Any feedback appreciated.

Firstly, this is my rig as of current:

Bass - Modulus Fleabass + Cabinet - Ampeg 8x10 + Head - Ampeg CL and GK 700RB + pedals



The type of sound that I've been trying to create for my band consists of a lot of low-end. ALOT. I love the feeling of a very deep, almost dub-step, type of bottom coming from my cab. It totally helps with the bands' overall sound and fits oddly well. That being said, we play all sorts of music from reggae to hardcore. And in every style that we play, I like to have the low-end feeling constant. That being said, my low end is not the issue.

My problem is that since I play with so much bass in my sound, the actual tone of notes suffer. For example, when I play my higher strings, the notes lack a large amount of feel, so much so that you can't hear them anywhere near as well as the lower strings.

To combat this, I've come with the idea of splitting my bass signal into two separate amps and each of those amps being plugged into their own cabs (dual-mode 8x10). That way, I can still keep my Ampeg for all the low-end that I love to feel, while being able to set my GK head for tonal purposes and be able to hear some quality on top of the bass.

I'm trying to do this by plugging my bass into a Boss LS-2 and putting it on the 'AB mix' setting and sending both channels to their different amps, respectively.



What I am asking is, aside from impedance and ohms (which I've already been checking), are there any problems, situations, suggestions that anyone can think of that would lead to problems in doing this? Any thoughts that anyone may have? A better way to achieve? Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated.

Both heads into seperate cabs(?), or into the one 810(?) Be careful that they really are sent to seperate cabs, 2 heads into one cab equals both amps fried. I know some 810's have seperate inputs for both halves of the cab, (410 ea.), but one slip could mean diaster. I'd get another cab, to be safe.

What you're describing is a rig that will put out a lot of sound at low frequencies (perhaps down to 30 Hz) and you aren't going to be doing this with an 8x10 closed back cabinet.

You need a dedicated subwoofer cabinet (with a 15") and a lot of power to drive it. You'd have this amp/cab set up in addition to your regular rig and you'd run it off the "line out" or DI.




Also understand that simply being able to pound out low frequencies on bass will open up a whole can of worms with regard to your band's overall sound. Particularly if you are playing live with a PA. Too much bass from your rig will muddy up the sound and not in a good way. It could very well make your whole band sound like crap.

I was plugging both heads into the 8x10 and using the dual mode so that it would operate as two 4x10 rather than one 8x10. Luckily, I was/am very careful with the set-up and only tested it out in a 'home' setting. No level of volume close to blowing something.


Regarding live playing, I've been playing live with my band for many months now in all sorts of settings. Anywhere that has a PA set-up, I'm able to adjust for the proper amount of low-end that I prefer and is necessary. Anywhere that doesn't have a proper PA, is going to sound like butt-hole regardless.


This has helped a great deal.
