Asymmetrical necks!

Hey all!

I own a Tobias bass, and I just love the feeling of the asymmetrical neck. Are there more brands than Tobias that have asymmetrical necks? I found that the Warmoth Gecko-necks was asymmetrical. The MTD-basses is asymmetrical I assume...? Even the cheaper models?

Carvin does a 5 string asymetrical neck with wide string spacing. It's a beautiful thing.

Fender Roscoe Beck's are asymmetrical I believe.

Ibanez BTB1000 series have assymetrical necks as well as most of the BTB500 series. The BTB400 series doesn't.

heres a stupid question. whats asymetrical mean in terms of a bass neck. i know the meaning of the word, im guessing theres more wood on one side of the neck. not round or well symetrical.

you are correct. The neck is a wee bit slimmer on the G string side.

It's subtle, but nice. i've had three such necks, one by Carvin, MTD and Ibanez

This is the explaination from the Warmoth site about their Gecko asymmetrical neck:

"The Gecko series bass necks feature an asymmetric back shape for a more comfortable, fast feeling. These necks "feel" thin, but retain sufficient bulk for strength and tone. The asymmetric back shape keeps perceived neck bulk down for maximum hand comfort and to create a thinner, fast feeling neck. The bass side of the neck is thicker, with the treble side being thinner. Your thumb will find easy reference as your hand glides up and down the neck. This is a very comfortable neck to play."

i LOVE the asymetrical neck on my MTD heir 5.
LOVE IT.

The F bass has an asymmetrical neck also.

USA Hamer Cruise bass (the ones from the 1990's). One of the nicest, if not THE nicest, neck I have ever played.

My 1996 Hamer Cruise bass is up for sale in "Gear For Sale". Shameless, self-serving plug, I know.

In general, these are super-sweet basses that are grossly under-rated.

I worked for Tobias Guitars for almost 10 years. When I started we were the only ones I knew of that made the Asymmetric neck. It is surpising to find out how many companies do it now.

Thanks guys, for your responses =) Now I know of a bunch more brands that use asymmetrical necks. It still feels like I´m sticking to Tobias though, hehe =)

Oh, it´s you that written that article about Tobias basses. Very interesting stuff. Yeah, it´s really cool that so many have started making the asymmetrical necks on their basses to. And very good also, because I love the feel of them =)
