At what age have you started playing bass?

Bought my first bass at age 67. It was/is a beautiful dog-house that decorated my living room for about a year, as I knew NOTHING about a bass and couldn't find a teacher. I finally located a wonderful teacher, Rusty Holloway, at the University of Tennessee music department, who agreed to try to teach an old fart the basics of the instrument. I am a retired college professor and know something about education and Rusty is the best teacher I have ever come across; in any subject.

I make no claims to have mastered the instrument, but it changed my life and, at nearly 83, I still enjoy my music and perform regularly. Had I started earlier, I might have had a chance to have been a competent musician. Still, it's been a wonderful ride.!

25. But I've been a performing musician since I was about 5, so picking up bass at 25 was simply adding another instrument, not learning to become a musician.

I was about 12. A friend bought one and I learned how to play with a pick before picking up the guitar to round out the rest of the teenage band.

I was 15. Had taken guitar lessons for 3 years and was pretty good. Inspired by Paul McCartney, I started playing bass (a Hofner 500/1) and was invited to join the high school stage band where we played pop music hits. My parents were so relieved by this legit outlet for my musical aspirations that they bought me a used 1967 Fender Bassman amp! I've had many basses and amps since then.

Started out playing acoustic guitar and alto sax in the 1960's, then added baritone sax in the 70's and tenor sax. Continue to play these instruments today.

Took up electric bass in my 50's, and never looked back. Play and rehearse couple times per week, and drop-off to play the Bari sax (still a blast), as well as alto and tenor saxes. My solo gigs, however, are all acoustic guitar and vocals...

I got my first bass at either 14 or 15 after having played trumpet, baritone horn and guitar for a couple of years, I had wanted to play bass since I was ten years old after first hearing I Wanna Hold Your Hand by the Beatles in early 1964.
