Mark - what really cemented it for me was when I compared to cost of buying all the parts and assembling them myself plus the cost of a pro set up vs. the cost of having Dan do all the work it was just about a wash (within $100). So for that amount of money, I get a warrantee, and some piece of mind that it will be done right.

My wife was relieved when she learned about this since she knows fancy necks and wood tops are quite pricey. Her exact words: "I was planning on being out of the house the day you put that thing together".

Just picked up the 70's J Dan built that was reviewed here a few weeks back. It was up for sale on EBay and I managed to snag it at the last minute. It's really really nice. The nitro finish on the neck isn't goupy at all like a few Fender CS basses I've played. Access is clean all the way up to the last fret and Nordstrand p/u's sound fantastic. Still dialing in my setup to my usual wuss-level. I've got 4 gigs this week so it will get put through the paces. Very cool bass and definitely worth checking out.

I just started an Atkinson thread because for whatever reason I couldn't find this one. I searched for it before and it didn't show up. Bryan showed me the way, so thank you, Bryan. Kind of embarrassing, really.

I'll just copy and paste part of what I posted in own thread.

Dan is such an easy guy to work with. His level of enthusiasm is through the roof. Aside from being extremely amiable, his communication is excellent, especially if you're like me and bug him as much as possible. When he said he received my payment I replied with, "Now get building ". How did he reply? "You got it! Thanks. This will be a fun build for sure!"

It's getting harder and harder to wait for this bass. I'm almost at the six week mark so it won't be much longer now.

Here are the specifications of my custom Atkinson "Pea Bass":
Alder Body
Olympic White Finish (Nitro)
Maple Neck with Nitro Finish
Maple Fingerboard
Rolled Fret Edges
Black Dot Inlays and Side Dots
Nordstrand NP4 Pickups
Vintage-Style Bridge
Hipshot Ultralite Tuners (D-Tuner on E String)
3-Ply Black/White/Black Pickguard
Thumb Rest
Vintage Bridge Cover
Vintage Pickup Cover

The neck will be similar to a '60s Jazz. C shape, 7.25" radius, 1.5" nut, and .830" thickness.

Dan has agreed to do a small amount of aging to the body, neck, and tarnish all of the hardware for me. He will also be shipping it in an SKB rectangular soft case.

I think we're on the same build schedule. I am getting swamp ash body with 5A quilt top, birdseye neck/board, J-bass body w/Nordy big singles and Nordy preamp w/passive tone option. Hipshot UL tuners and A bridge.

Finish will be poly but I haven't settled on a color until I get photos. With these woods there will be no relics and no nitro.

Stay tuned, really excited and will post pics when I get 'em.

Guys, I just discovered Atkinson, so sorry for the newbie questions.
I am also seriously considering placing an order for a P/J.
Wondering about, of all things, the neck finish.
Those who have the nitro finish on the neck, could you describe the feel for me? I am used to EBMM wax/gun oil finished necks, and poly finish necks, but never played a nitro one.

Also, what size frets do you guys recommend, I prefer smaller versus the F-der large chunky ones.

Thanks for any responses.

yeah....I'm in the same boat usually but his is by far the least offensive. I won the bass off EBay so I didn't get to choose. I'd probably go with poly on a new build but I gig a lot and haven't really had a problem. Dan's basses are top notch though.

Dan said he'll have my bass in his hands within four days, so expect another picture or two soon. The neck is also on the way to his nitro guy.

Things are starting to come together. I'm damn excited. I'm going to spend months finding out what strings I like on it the most.

EDIT: I'm also half-tempted to drop a ToneStyler in, as well as a Babicz bridge.
