Attention Linux/Gnome Users!

I've used Linux in the past and have recently started using Ubuntu as my main operating system again and I've enjoyed it so far. It seems, however, that Cannonical have decided to drop Gnome as the default environment for the next release and are going with Unity (Cannonical's own brand) instead.

Unity seems to be pretty nasty from what I've seen so far. Have a read of this if you haven't already seen it. Natty Narwhal with Unity: Worst Ubuntu beta ever • The Register

It also seems that Gnome 3 has been released. I downloaded the test drive thing from the Gnome website and it also looks pretty horrible. It appears that it tries to turn your computer into an iPad. See here for a review YouTube - GNOME 3 SHELL in Ubuntu Linux Lucid 64bit Review Tutorial (the review is from a while ago but the release seems to be pretty much the same).

When all this stuff gets forced on us what are you going to do? Soldier on with Ubuntu with Unity, switch to Gnome 3, or use something else?

I'll be interested to see what people are planning on doing. I can see myself moving in the direction of KDE (either with OpenSUSE or Kubuntu).

Hopefully they will drop back to Gnome2 for 11.04 then.

They'll have to up it to 3 at some point though. In Gnome3 Shell you can't even minimise windows. I can't see myself ever using that. It does look like you can drop it back to the old panel though but you have to change window manager to do it.

Meh. I don't need to chase every new version, and it sounds from the article like the new user interface will eventually be better. I'm sure it will still be better than Windows.

I had to use Windows today thanks to Turbo Tax. Grrr...
