I have had an Alvarez Artist ABG with a piezo bridge pickup for over 30 years, and it does find its place in acoustic versions of songs that I otherwise play on my fretless 5 with half-rounds.
- I bought it to have something that sounded really different from my other bass, so it has phosphor bronze strings, and I often play with a pick.
- Yes, it sounds pretty weak/thin unamplified. Not a problem at a private party/living room setting. Needs an amp elsewhere.
- When amplified, it has a really great attack.
- I almost never turn the treble knob up past halfway.
- I usually write new basslines to work with the sound (and the missing string). The guitarist (who usually plays a Strat or SG) is adapting the songs too.
- Violent Femmes are acoustic rock too.
