Best way to attach a Pbass bridge cover without drilling?

Hi, all.

I picked up a beautiful Suhr P bass and am interested in attaching a Fender style bridge cover so I can easily add material to mute the strings, a la Jamerson.

However, I don’t want to drill holes in my bass. I’m hoping for suggestions on mounting it in a way that down the road if I want to remove it my bass finish is pristine.

There's a few options besides drilling, but do you want the mute under or over the strings? The resistance of foam over the strings and vibrations will probably knock anything short of a screw loose. Might have a better chance if you put the foam under, but the vibrations of the bass could still knock some adhesive methods loose.

Disregarding that, you could try something like 3M adhesive strips, but while it might not take off the gloss or paint, there could be a difference in coloration once removed. Any stronger adhesives could cause issues either physically or chemically removing them. You'll also have the hole on the bridge covers unfilled, so you'll need to figure something out to cover those up if it bothers you.

Is the end goal here aesthetic or JUST trying to get that sound with the foam? You could still put the foam under or use the bars with felt slots to place the strings in, which should get the same sound but are removable and shouldn't affect the bass at all.
