Attenuators or Alternatives

I'm pondering the purchase of an old solid state Marshall guitar amp that I can use at high gain for both bass and guitar.

The issue is that I live in an apartment and so can't play at high volumes.

To address this issue, I'm considering buying a Rivera RockCrusher Power Attenuator, which seems designed precisely for this purpose: high gain at low volumes.

The RockCrusher is not inexpensive, though. So can anyone suggest alternatives, especially lower cost alternatives?

Thanks for your thoughts!
