Audacity help please.

I swear I made this thread last night, and now I come back and its gone! Whatever.

I downloaded Audacity because it seems easier than Cubase SX3. Anyways, I dont know how to set up my USB audio interface as my line in and out for my computer. I have all the parts, i just need help on how to do it. I'm running Windows Vista, if that helps. Please help me out, a thank you.

Cubase is super complicated, but once you learn the basic functions it's very easy to do a simple recording. It's getting beyond that point that can take a long time to learn.

In Cubase you would go into the Tools menu and Device Setup, make sure the proper interface is selected, make a new audio track, click the input drop down box and select your input, then you should be ready to record.

ps, installed Audacity.. I think you need to go to the Edit menu and Preferences. Then go to the Audio I/O tab, make sure the proper device is selected in both Playback/Recording boxes, and you may need to check the Software Playthrough box if you want to monitor it while you record. Then hit record and it should automatically make a new audio track and start recording.

Try changing the "High Quality Sample Rate Converter" to Fast Sync to see if that helps your latency. I would also try changing the "Default Sample Format" to 16 bit. Those are just stabs in the dark. It can't hurt.

I don't do multitrack recording with Audacity either. I use it for transferring old tape and editing digital audio.

I use audacity with Vista.
I do record with it, but I run through my Zoom 4 track first and monitor that instead - once I have set the level.

One think about Vista is that a recording input is only available when it's actually in use AFAIK, so it can be a bit misleading.
I use Line-In on my Tosh, and that's only available in Audacity when there is a jack in it, even though it's clearly there in the sound manager thingy...
