Audere Vs John East

Its unclear whether you are being deliberately obtuse or simply didnt understand.., so, given I assume you know my answer if the former ;), I shall infer that you didnt understand my post...

I meant (and sorry, i thought it was obvious) that a preamp with controls set flat should be transparent...ie neither add nor remove any frequency bands...

I know what you meant...I'm just being difficult. ;)

When is my J retro flat response ready? :)
I am becoming inpatient...been waiting for bass direct since 2 weeks!
They said it was out of stock so I am taking the chance to speak to the man itself...
Btw, congrats on the MMSR....it brought my stingray back to life, big up John :bassist:

Very sorry for the delay, they aren't a stock product in the standard sense, but we do make small batches of them, often having stock. Unfortunately your order came when we were just out of them. Yours should be complete in the next few days.

No worries and no rush, i can wait,
take your time to make it a nice one!
I understand as well that as it's a particular product, bits and bobs may not be always ready so....no worries, when it will be ready it will be ready, no pressure.
really curious to know how this flat response works with my J bass...

My spacing is 60's style and i'm reading good things about it!

I have an Audere 4 band jazz (Pro JZ3) plate coming in the mail. I even asked David to increase the output a sukoshi and he did so with no qualms or added price. I have a feeling I am going to like what arrives in the mail!

P.S. EdwinHurwitz, I have the ACG EQ02 jazz plate and I couldnt agree more. Very diverse and intriquite. My only gripe is I wish it had a bass boost/cut switch like the alembic electronics.

P.P.S. Mr East, can an ACG EQ02 jazz plate be modded to have a "pull" bass boost on one of the top knobs like your j-retro has with the "bright" function?

That's one of the reasons I found the EQ02 limiting. Having a separate filter for each pickup allows for bass boosting without being at the expense of the rest of the tone (weird naming convention, btw, it should be that the number represents the number of filters, but I understand how it evolved differently.). But, my feeling is that the filters are best suited to a different kind of approach which is more like changing the resonant character of the instrument rather than a simple equalization change. Usually if I want a bass boost, I'll just do that on the amp.

All that said, what would make the ACG preamp totally complete in my mind would be the ability to mix the unfiltered signal with the filtered signal. Then getting a bass boost without altering the rest of the tone would be a trivial matter. I've tried to do this in an experimental fashion, but haven't had much luck.

I'm waiting for my ACG01 to come back from John with updates in the frequency response and a stacked vol/blend so it can go in my Modulus Q6 TBX. I can't wait!

(I've only just seen the above)

Can't see any easy way to accomplish the bass boost request, very sorry!

I'll tell you this: I have both Audere and East pre's.... And they are both stellar products made by VERY awesome guys.

John East went above and beyond to help me with a problem I was having a few months ago, exceptional dude who really cares and tries to help a total stranger from across the pond. Dave from Audere was very gracious with me as we'll on a separate issue.

Audere Vs John East

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are my 2 favorite preamps ... I give a slight edge to the Audere ... both are excellent.

The Audere colors the tone slightly and the East is more transparent.

I use the Audere 4 band in several basses.

These two guys are among the best in the business. And out of the business, too!

That makes it sound perfect.

If an onboard preamp cannot give you the honest tone of the pickups by being transparent, then to me, it has missed its primary design goal by a large yard.

Providing additional tonal flexibility through EQ, be it 2, 3 or 4 band, scoop, hump, profile or whatever is the correct design goal for an on-board preamp however this can only be of value to me if that first goal is met.

It always comes back to the instrument. I heard it said a long time ago that a great bass is one that sounds good with the least amount of electronic intervention: it should sound good passive and EQ set flat. Then things like preamps and amp EQ are just there to tweak the sound.

Granted, things like preamps can make a not-so-good bass sound better, but if you need to make radical EQ adjustments via preamp or amp, chances are you really need to find another bass.

Anyway, a musical instrument is organic - all these components: tone woods, neck/fingerboard type, strings (new, old), pickups, etc. -- if a certain preamp rocks your world, it's probably probably because it's in synch with all the other ingredients that combine to make that wonderful sound you're loving. Which is why we bassists keep mucking around, swapping pickups, preamps, trying every string under the sun, etc. -- looking for that right combination. It never ends!

Talkin about preamps, the combinations trial ended for me when I fitted the j retro flat response on my jazz and the east 2 band version on my US stingray.
These preamps gave a helluva shake to Both of my babies, they're x-basses right now!

I was able to blow one of the speakers of a 4x10 ampeg cab with the stingray. Not that this makes me feel more professional but I feel like I'm handling a weapon more than I bass when I play that one. The jazz bass has acquired a superb tone Instead, investing in a j retro can be just as wise as wearing ur shoes before going out. Really made a difference within my arsenal...

This point was really made to me with my G&L L2000 basses. They sound great passive and, with the preamp engaged, they sound, well, not much different: still great and still in character. My M2000 with its 18V full time 3-band preamp sounds quite different, interesting, but not necessarily *better*. Oh, you can tweak the latter into some really different tones, but the passive L2000 is still where it's at.

Common dilemma! I went east because of low output from an audere classic 4 band. I get the principle or being as close to passive as possible, but I just didnt like the output level.
So I went east and I love it.

P.S. Variable mids are awesome.

I was confused when I first started using my Audere preamp. The output was so low - something wasn't right. But that was with the -15db cut engaged on my amplifier, which I just assumed was necessary since the bass now had an internal preamp. In any case, I emailed Audere and then their reply just pointed out another way in which this preamp is not the kind of preamp you are used to. Dave @Audere said that, unlike other preamps, the Audere doesn't increase gain (or cut - he didn't actually say that about cut, but I think it's also true) when EQ is boosted. Which means that you don't have to engage the -15db cut like you would with a preamp that increases gain when you boost EQ.

I've got plenty of output now. I wonder if this might be the reason why you thought the Audere's output was too low?

Older thread but, I'll play.

I put an Audere in my Lakland DJ5. Went with Audere because the passive tone of the bass sounded great but I wanted to be able to tweak things at the bass if needed without drastically changing the overall inherent character of the bass. Now, I have found that I rarely adjust the EQ but have altered the stock Z-mode switches to give me a quick brighter tone or remove some of the highs. Very nice preamp.
