Double Bass Audio Technica Pro 35 "R"

Finally -- got me a mic! I picked it up used from my old bass teacher who was in town last night.

Anyway, the initial trial has been OK...definitely getting "my sound only louder". I'm getting a very clean sound through a small Behringer mixer (temporarily) into my SWR 200 watt head & 2x10 rig.

Started flat, had to cut some highs to avoid that 8K sounding feedback.

Tried clamping the mic in various places -- as per the other current "clip on" thread. Tried the tail piece and also the adjuster wheels. Getting a fine sound...but there is a definitive threshold of volume that can't be crossed!

It's also revealed a rather nasty buzzzzz coming from the D string...but I suspect that might be some wires, etc., from the various pickups I employ.

So here's a coupla questions:

1. My mic capsule says Pro 35 R. I know this model is probably at least 6 or 7 years old. Has anyone else had better luck upgrading the capsule itself? Does anyone know if this is cardiod or hypercardiod?

2. I really need a new foam windscreen. This one is starting to break down and is leaving all kinds of debris on the instrument. Can these be ordered?

3. Blender...so now it's back to shopping for a new preamp/blender. I've heard lots of kudos for the D-Tar products. I was also looking at that Summit that everyone is raving about...is it true you can use one of those variable impedance input preamps to also mix in a separate mic signal? That would be a cool feature!

Not sure how this might work through my amp on louder jazz gigs. I might use it through a small PA system on a singer gig though. Usually, we do a drummerless trio on quiet club dates...looking forward to hearing how that might sound.

On smaller gigs you can blend w/ your pick up thru your amp, but at loud volumes w/ your amp on the floor is recipe for feedback problems. If you can elevate your amp on a pole like Chris Fitgerald does the feedback thing will be helped, but you lose some low end power (the stage/floor itself resonates some lows) which you may need w/ a loud drummer.
In loud clubs I've put my pick up thru the amp and given the mic signal alone to the house PA system and try to position myself not too close to the drummer or atleast facing the bass away from the drum kit. This has worked great w/ that same mic. I think you can order their windscreens from the AT website. Invalid Link Removed

Yeah, I think going through the PA system might be the best option. I really don't want to buy yet another box to hook up...

I also love to have my amp on the floor for the most bass response...but I know raising it up works wonders in certain rooms.

Thanks for the link to Audio Technica, I just emailed their parts dept. to see if I can get a replcaement windscreen.
