auditioning for a band, and I have a question....

I'm trying out for a band to replace their bass player. Now they have given me 4 songs to learn. And whilst I am learning them, I don't play like the old bass player.
My style is a bit different to his, and I find I struggle to play the lines exactly as he does, and while the basis of what I am playing is essentially the same, most of my fills are completely different, but still fit. Should I be playing it the same way as the other bass player.

They probably won't notice the difference and likely never listened that close to what the old pass player did.

Just do your own thing. If it fits, it fits. If they don't like it and want it closer to the original tell them to re-hire their old bassist.

When I auditioned for my current band, the leader said he wanted upright bass. He gave me a rough mix from the CD they were working on as I was leaving the country for the two weeks prior to the audition. The songs on the CD were being driven by a funky driving six string electric bass. I emailed the band leader and told him that I wouldn't be able to play all those notes on upright and that the feel would be very different. His answer was "Great. I'm tired of having a lead bass player." So I agree, talk to the band leader and then do what you do.
