AUGH! HELP ME!

I was just playing my MIJ P-Bass when suddenly something happened. I don't know what. But now my bass makes no sound but an annoying ground tone that gets louder when I touch metal parts of the bass, strings, bridge, knobs, anything. Did I knock some grounding wire or something loose inside the cavity? I tried two different patch cables and the same thing, so it's not a cable problem, which sucks.

I was going to get it looked at and maybe set up, my buddy a guitar tech will do it for $35 (but $80 if I need a fret dress). If you guys can tell me what the hell is going on I could probably get him to fix it.

Open it up and check the wiring, if it is just a wire which has come loose from the solder then you can save yourself $35. But if the 35 covers a set up it may just be worth it.

My dad and I can solder so chances are we can fix it for free if that's all it is.

sounds like an output jack.

i have the problem often because i sling my basses around on stage like Michael Jackson dose to his kids off balconies in Germany.

it happened so often at one point the local shoppe that fixes my gear would always ask "what did you break this time?"


but its an easy fix if its an output jack

Could be the jack, could be a wire. If you and yuour dad can solder and you have a continuity tester or a multi-meter then go to the Seymore Duncan website, download his schematic for P-Bass wiring for reference, de-string, open the bass up and have a look.

NOTE- the color's used at Duncan may vary from those in use with your pickup. What is important is to be consistent with wire placement. If in your bass, magenta or blue or white or black - goes to the 'leg' on the pot - then consider that color 'hot'. and the other color as ground.

Good learning experience for you in the care and feeding of your P... BTW - replacing the output jack on an older, gigging is never a bad idea ...
