Aural Enhancers...maybe?

So for Christmas, just to round out my wish list, I'm thinking of adding on to my signal chain. Since I'm "downgrading" in a sense, (going from active to passive, from 5 strings to 4 strings) I decided that I could make up the percieved loss somewhere. I want a sort of outboard preamp type of thing. Like a..."aural enhancer," if you know what I mean. Maybe add some grit in there once in a while...

I guess what I just described is a Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver, but I'm asking this question because I'm sure there are others out there, and maybe a SansAmp isn't what I need/want. I also saw the Tech 21 VT Bass, which looks like a simpler, toned-down version of the SansAmp. Is that any good?

vt bass. i heard one live and it absolutely blew my mind. the other bassist had a bddi, and it just couldn't keep up. well, really it depends on its application, if you need a DI then go with the sansamp, still an awesome pedal. but if you are looking for a sweet OD/preamp/always on pedal then i'd say vt bass.
