Austin Music?

I’m heading to Austin TX tomorrow to run the half marathon on Sunday and plan on staying a few days to check out the city. Anyone have recommendations for live music? Open mics? Good bass, guitar or drum shops? Got a gig to check out? I’ll be on the area until next Thursday morning….

Man, I lived in austin in the early 90's. Spent my share of time rt the Saxon pub, hole in the wall, and Continental Club. (In addition to Liberty Lunch, Emos, the Carrousel Lounge and a few other spots that are probably long gone) glad to see these institutions still standing.

Some nice stuff listed above already. Adding Austin Guitar House to the list of shops (they’ve scaled their bass inventory back a bit but they still have some great stuff), and be sure to check out The Elephant Room, Parker Jazz Club and Monk’s if you like jazz.

adding White Horse to this. But, if the Sahara Lounge has something going on, that's about as old funky Austin as it gets. Otherwise Ggaa has steered you right.

The nice thing about Saxon is it's literally right next door to South Austin Music. Hit SAM up first (they are one of the few non-GC shops in Austin open on Sundays too, albeit they close at 5) and then walk next door to the Saxon Pub for a brewski.

If you're into some Mediterranean-like scenery at the lake, check out Hippie Hollow. The Oasis is also nearby. Weather forecast looks perfect on Sunday and Monday and probably Tuesday.
