Anyone know of a bassist who has covered this as a solo piece? I'm thinking lots of tapping/slides/harmonics. Would it even be possible to convey the emotion of this version with a single instrument?

yes it is quite doable. Not a tough tune, just 251 in maj and relative minor.

Chris Biondo was the bassist for her recordings. If memory serves they also dated for a while as well.

I seem to remember Biondo was also her producer and early advocate for getting her exposure. Cassidy was one of the best interpreter of songs ever!

Good luck conveying the emotion of Eva Cassidy's vocal, which I believe at this point knew she was dying of Melanoma. Of all the people who have covered this song, no one comes close to the emotion captured in this performance.
