Aux sub feed question

I am using a presonus studiolive 16.0.2 board into a qsc kw181 and 2 k10s or 2 yamaha dxr10s on top. We are bass, drums (kick, snare and oH), elec guitar, acoustic guitar, keys and 5 vocals. Am I better suited running bass and kick into aux channel, then out to sub and the rest through the tops, with high pass set at 100 hz....Or full range into subs then to tops, using the built in high pass filter on the tops?

You want to feed an aux output (say, for example, Aux 8, but it can be any one of the axes) straight to the subs. Well, it's best to run that aux output into a processor channel set to low-pass (meaning cutting off everything above 8- or 100 hZ, typically) and feed that processor channel's output straight to the sub amps. Then take the left and right and send them to the processor (which should be high-passed at 80 or 100hZ) and on to the mains. You are creating 3 systems for the PA..The left and right mains, and the aux-driven subs. They should not interact (well, electrically anyway, needed to make that distinction).

Now, when you push up the channel fader of the kick or bass channel (or floor tom, or CD or iPad, whatever you see fit), that input goes to the mains. Bring up aux 8 of that same channel to send it to the subs. You can play with how much you send to the subs to balance it out with the sends to the mains.

It depends on what uses you have for your aux sends, but I typically feed the subs with an aux. I use a Presonus 1642. Bass, kick, and toms get assigned to the mains, and fed to the subs by aux, set to post. This keeps any unwanted low end from other mics and instruments on stage out of the subs. I often use 3 or 4 more aux sends for individual monitor mixes. (This means I can give the singers as much of themselves as they need, for example, or give the drummer more kick in his monitor without driving everyone else crazy.)

I'm not as familiar with the 1602, but on my board I can also tailor the compression and eq to the subs, vs the mains, by setting up the master aux send.

There is always the other argument, that a well balanced and eq'd system doesn't need separate sub control. Proper filter settings should roll off annoying lows from channels that don't need the low end. I think it comes down to the quality of your system, how much you trust the hpf's on the mains, and how much control you want over the individual instruments.

And thankfully, that argument is going away as older engineers (and at 56, I'm smack in that category, ya'll!) leave the field. There is another method that those guys, as I do, prefer to use that uses either a matrix output or a mono bus, but it's a little more involved and means more tuning work with the PA. The argument is when you have the subs on a aux, the low end gets treated as an effect, which can be true, and can yield lousy results. If you put the subs on a mono buss and set up the mains and the subs for equal energy at and around the crossover point, you can simply assign what you want to the mono bus, then you take the variable of the sub level out of the equation and EQ that input without the guesswork of the level being in play.

However, in the grand scheme of things, it's not brain surgery and with a little bit of experimenting (not on the gig, hopefully,), it's pretty easy to get good results.
 
Well said Geri. I'm even a bit older, and my first disclaimer should be that I've never trained as a sound professional. I've always been a bass player first, but I've worked for sound companies in the past, picked up some basics and great tips, and try to keep up. It seems that I always end up working with a system that hasn't been properly tuned, set up in a room with a really awkward layout!

I understand and appreciate your comments on the matrix or mono buss. I have seen systems run exactly that way.

Ya know, my response to your comment could have been taken as a smack down of your comment and I certainly didn't mean that at all. If a band engineer came through, wanting the subs "inline", as they are called now when they aren't on an aux, I was perfectly happy to accommodate his wishes. It was easy enough with a processor preset change. I"m all for engineers being comfortable and having exactly what they want and need to make the best presentation of their band's sound. I just drew the line at "please pull that (whatever brand it is I hate) out of the rack. It's presence gives me bad vibes" (I've heard this twice in 20 years, I'm not kidding). My response: "I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. Grow up and mix your band like a man (or woman, if that had been the case), or if you can't, I can".

I think a better way to put my first sentence would have been "That is a perfectly valid argument, we just see it less and less as time goes on"...:D...

I use to own that Presonus board and now I use a Mackie DL1608. I use 2 x K212 subs as well as 2 x K10's for tops. I do the left right pan thing instead of an aux out. Meaning I pan every channel except the bass and kick to the right. That side out goes to my tops with the "sub" filter engaged on the K10's. The kick and bass are left centered and the left out of the board goes to the subs. Since the K212s have a built in filter I don't worry about it crossing into the K10 frequencies. It is an easy system to deploy and sound greats. If I ever feel the subs are to hot I can back them down on the cabs but that only happened once (I'm 61 :).

wow, really?

the idea of just treating crossover, subs and tops as a "flat response black box" once it's been dialed in, and relying on channel EQ and HPF'ing to put each instrument where it belongs in the frequency spectrum, is an old school thing that's kinda going away in the bigger leagues?

Well, kinda, but not totally...

Walter, I did walk back my comment from the "thankful" notion, with an apology to that poster. Your point is very well taken...I read this at work on my phone and waited until I got home so I could reply on the computer because I knew it would get lengthy.

These days, in the big leagues, 90% of the time, we see a system aimed, flown, and measured and set up just right. THEN the subs are piled up either left or right or all in the center and treated like a separate system, if treated at all. No, it's not the best results. And a lot of times, there's just barely enough time to get this much done before the bands are loading in and breathing down our necks. Having said this, the BIGGEST of the big leagues DO indeed take the time to carefully align the subs (with either delay or phase-alignment-through, and on good days, we don't have to choose between the two), treating them as the low-frequency bandpass of the PA.

The one big problem that never gets any attention, never gets discussed, never gets pointed out is that, when the subs are driven from an aux, we are varying the input's lever to the subs, NOT using EQ to treat the input. This throws any alignment work out the window basically, because now we are also changing the sub's crossover point in a roundabout way. Hard to explain here, but it's true. Another anomaly from setting up PAs this way is that if you record the shows, you've screwed up the reference of the bass and the kick drum (and floor tom, keyboard, playback, whatever you've sent to the subs via the aux send) to the recording. Way early on, I tuned and still tune the PA as linear (not flat, there's an explanation for that, too) so that hopefully, my 2-track board recordings would be close to the live mix. Now, if you push the bass up in the subs via the aux, that's not making the trip to the recording. This has reared its head at the church I go to where we depend on the live mix recordings to critique things. A lot of recordings lately have very little bass and kick on them. On a service when I'll sit with the volunteers that mix and watch how they are mixing the bass and kick. I swear, it must be natural to push the bass and kick inputs up a little bit, then lay into the subs from the input's aux. I have them bring those aux sends down a good bit, then push up the input's main level, and and the aux send in a little bit as necessary. Hey, now we have bass and drums in the live recording. I want to use the mono bus for the subs (for reasons I'll describe further down), but since the system is a true left-center-right system, the mono bus tied up.

Okay, having said all of this, the effects of what I've described aren't devastating or mix-killing for most everyone with SL24s or X32s or other small mixers and small PAs in clubs. Hell, 98% of the guys that show up to mix on our rigs operate this way. I've never heard an audience member say "gee, you really hay-stacked the crap outta that bass input, dude! What were you thinking!!".

The thing that a lot of the true big boys (as well as I, but I'm not a big boy at all) do is align the PA, sub included as part of the system and not an effect. The subs are driven from a mono buss or group and tuned for equal energy and alignment with the mains. But now, an input can be assigned to the subs, but not varied in level, because that's not necessary now. The bass, kick drum, playback, etc. (even vocals, if you are mixing Josh Turner, Randy Travis, et al) are now in the subs, but can be EQed at the channel, knowing that the EQ is accurate because of how the subs are set up with the PA.

I can attest that even with steep high-pass filters, mixing an orchestra this way provides a very clean mix from the PA, more so than using high-pass filters (which I still use, well, because I can...:o). But I'll plead guilty to more often than not, setting up the PA the bad ol' way I described earlier when I had to mix regular bands. It's one of those "just make it work" situations that gets handed a whole lot to local sound guys dealing with national acts like I did for a long time,

Walter, I feel like you probably are aware of everything I've spoken of here. I'm kinda explaining the point I was making and how dealing with all morphed along over the years. And don't get me started on the cardioid subs, end-fire subs, stair-stacked subs, center subs, spaced, out and outer subs delayed and on and on. These methods work well for directing sub energy, but they take a lot more time and a lot more space to set up.

At this point, I'm kinda wishing I hadn't said anything because these subjects get way outside the scope of most of what's going on here and I don't want to muddy the waters up with this stuff. Especially since I've tried to abbreviate some of my points to keep this from becoming a dissertation. Everyone just carry on as usual.

no no, this is good stuff! i'm (like i said before) really just a bar band guy, but i'm learning a little about the stuff you're talking about, like about how if you have two frequency bands crossed over next to each other and you turn one band up, the crossover point moves; i could see how that could throw things off if you mix by turning up something's sub aux rather than its overall level or tweaking its EQ.

(and i definitely wasn't trying to make any "point", it was a humble question to somebody who's done this in the bigger leagues :))

I do aux fed subs from a 16.4 2. With the QSC setup set the tops on Ext Sub and drive them directly from the a left and right. Put the kick, bass and my program music into an Aux and drive the sub with that. Leave the kick, Bass And program in the main mix of course.

Having 2 main volumes is awkward but ya get used it...

I tend to final EQ with known program material that I has a lot of low end content. These days I'm using Bonnie Raitt's SlipStream. The cuts Used to Rule the World and Right Down The Line are for me good indicators. I follow up with Ziggy Marley's Joy and Blues -if I can get happy with the low end on that one, I'm golden...

Yeah I could bust out SMAART but in most places I can get where I need to be with my ears...

I know the big guys have great reasons for why this is a bad approach but it really does seem to work in cleaning up the low end. Nobody ever said the loudness button on my old pioneer receiver made it more accurate, it made it sound pleasing... More or less, I treat the aux fed subs with that in mind. Like many things, moderation is key. Overall the system has to sound balanced.

Maybe you didn't intend to, but it was a fantastic couple of paragraphs on not forgetting basic tenets of setting up sound systems, small and large, that is still important to keep in mind. Honestly, it stopped me in my tracks at a fast food place, with a guy behind me tapping on my shoulder, letting me know my order was ready! Very much a "wow" moment. Sound guy area famous for not letting well enough alone, always trying something new, something different, which can be good and then not so much...:roflmao:

If it's okay, I'd like to quote that and send it to some old friends still in the business who are mired in the day in/day out business of one show after another, doing things that are popular and accepted without much thought, only thinking how to get to the next show in one piece. They will appreciate it as much as or more than I did.

I'm sorry if someone else addressed this. Only had time to skip but I wanted to chime in.

This is good advice but it is worth pointing out that with the QSC gear that the OP is using he won't need to use an external crossover, and it may be counter productive to do so. The QSC KW181 has a built in Low pass that cannot be defeated. It is set at 100hz and matches up with the high pass that is engaged with you select the "with sub" option on the QSC K or KW series tops.

With that in mind the OP can patch straight from the board into his QSC speakers and as long as the switches on the back are set correctly it will all line up nicely.

Well, kinda, but not totally...

This was a great post and I would recommend anyone that skipped over it for length to go back and read it, but I'll offer what I think is largely the summary, or at least what I take as the most important thing to remember here.

Set up your system correctly with the crossovers set appropriately and the output levels lined up the way you want them. Once you assign a bus/aux//group/matrix/whatever to drive the sub don't mess with the levels of the individual channels going to that bus. Send the same amount of signal for each instrument to the subs as you are to the tops, some might call this "unity gain". The difference is that certain instruments are or are not assigned to that particular output.

It's very temping to try to micro manage the levels going to the different outputs at first but it's counter productive. If you feel like you need more or less bass guitar in the sub give it a little bump down there on the channel eq.
 
Geri taught me this method over a decade ago. He learned the craft running sound for the Big-Names, and it really makes sense once you grasp the concept:

Your mixer needs a MONO ASSIGN switch on each channel... You're still choosing what inputs have access to the subs, simply by assigning the channel to the mono bus in addition to L/R. With the mono assignment, you're assigning program to subs at a predictable and consistent level so all the hard work setting a proper crossover and delay between subs and low-mids isn't for naught. If the relative level of the channel feed to mains and subs has the ability to vary as when done off an aux, you are actually shifting the acoustic crossover point up and down by varying the relative signal level going to the subs versus whatever is handling the next higher frequencies.

i'm using aux-fed subs with my little bar PA on a mackie DL1608, because i can use aux 6 for the sub and the main out for the tops, and put 24dB/octave high and low passes on them to make a crossover setup.

after reading about (and experiencing) this issue, i see now that i really need to get that whole aux 6 "mix" and overall sub level set and forgot, so i'm not throwing off the crossover point by changing it mid-show.

it would be nice if the mackie could do separate EQ for the L and R outs, so i could create my crossed-over high and low outs that way, then pan everything either hard to one side or center and follow geri's "all in or all out" rule with the sub assignments.

(or i could drag out a rack crossover again, but who wants to do that?)
