i got my avatar 4x10 today (4 ohms)!!!

and im getting my gk 1001RBI-II head tomorrow!!!

i was wondering what is the best way to hook the head up to the amp? i assume speakon...is the cabinet biamped? i know the head can send the highs to just the tweeter or whatever, but i am not sure how it works. can anybody give me some info

The Avatar cabinets will have a speakon connector as well as 1/4". The speakon would be most reliable. You can't use the GK horn management system with the Avatar cabinets so you'll have to use a standardly wired speakon cable, or a 1/4". Your owners manual should tell you how it should be wired. Check the GK website and see if you can download the manual.

i'm running a similar setup; avatar 2x10 and gk 700rb. All the GK's bi-amping does is allow you to control the horn with a knob on the head. on any non-GK cab, you're going to have to reach around to the back controls (no big deal)

im jealous of your discount. i called GC sometime before i bought my head and they told me they won't (willingly) lower the price from list. (too popular or something like that)

That's pretty much bull on that GC's part. Less than a month ago I bought my 1001RBII from GC Hollywood, CA (of all places) out the door at the exact same price you get from RMC Audio. That's WITH tax included. Yeah, they try to give you a guilt trip about it by asking if you want cables or anything, but they can do it. The person on the phone just wanted blow you off. Go down there, tell them you have a quote from RMC and you'd like to give them an opportunity to match it because "you like buying stuff from GC" :rolleyes: and see if they won't do it. Take it up with the manager if you have to. My trump card was that while they tried to give me the stall tactic to make me feel it was a hard decision for them, I mentioned that they sold the 1001RBII on Memorial Day (or Labor? Or President's Day? I forgot) for even LESS than what RMC sells them for. No lie because they really did. I said that I tried to pick it up then but I didn't have the money then or whatever. But of course, that would me too much for me to ask for now but price matching RMC would be fine and I'm ready to buy right now. That was all she wrote and I came home with a new amp. Someone on here once said that they are trained to take any deal. Some of the employees get lazy, or are jerks or whatever, but unless you are grabbing it out of someone's hand who is ready to pay full price, face to face with cash or credit card in hand ready to purchase at a price where they are still making some money, in general they'll do it.

And if all else fails, just buy it from RMC! Awesome prices. From what I hear, good customer service too. If I wasn't so impatient at the time, I would have bought from them. Never heard any problems buying stuff from them. In fact, if I return my 1001RBII for a 700RBII like I think I will, and GC isn't willing to deal, I will be buying from RMC. Best of luck...

OH btw, Avatar 410 Neo @ 4 ohms w/ GK 1001RBII here. Killer rig. Clean to overdriven, warm, and loud crushing volume. Headroom for days. Maybe a little too clean and too loud for me. Really want to try a 700RBII to exchange headroom for some additional growl. But in general, one of my favorite rigs so far. Personally speaking, in keeping with the light-ish, mobile rig philosophy, I'd only think about replacing the Avatar with a Mesa Powerhouse 4x10. Even then, I'd probably feel the cab difference would be marginal. I've owned Avatar in the past and I'm ready to say that they are at the top of their game with their current Neo 410. It takes the 1001RBII's massive power and low end capability like a champ with no sign of giving. I couldn't have asked for more. Good stuff. And the great price is the bonus and deal-maker. The icing on the cake is the Line-X coating and the light weight.

haha, that's why i didnt buy from GC. i called out of curiosity just to see if they had any in stock and what they would take for one. i won't usually go to GC anyway unless i have a few hours to kill bargaining with someone (are the employees even paid on commission?). but i always win and snag those cables as well ;)

And yea, what Transverz said about how GK + Avatar rigs sound. very satisfied with my avatar.

While it's not very difficult to re-wire your cab to make use of the G-K bi-amping feature, this subject came up in another thread here last week regarding Bill Fitzmaurice cabinets and it doesn't sound like it's a good idea. See thread here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=366001

The G-K internal crossover is fixed at 5000 hz which Bill says is at least an octave too high for use with most bass cabinet horns. Based on this, you're better off to run your G-K in non-bi-amp mode and not modify the Avatar wiring.

Sorry, but I think it's chickens**t to use RMC's excellent pricing just to force GC into selling to you. Why not buy from the guys that are automatically giving you the best deal. It's well known on this forum that RMC offers the best GK pricing for us consumers so I would think that they would certainly deserve the first shot at your business.

After spending twenty years as an automotive sales mgr. I've seen local customers come in ten times, wasting salespersons time and demanding "your best price". Then driving seventy miles across the state line to save $50 on a $25,000 car!

Now if you can make GC BEAT RMC's price buy it!

Congrats on your choices, two great products right there! I love my 4ohm Avatar 410 and GK 1001 setup. Plenty of power, I have over powered my guitar player (50 watt tube Fender head) and my drummer (fairly loud). The sound should be a step up for you, it was for me.

I just use a 3ft. 1/4 to 1/4 cable and it works for me. I haven't tried a Speakon but people tell me its more balanced. Just remember if you use a 1/4 to 1/4 cable to use the woofer volume control (all the way to the right of the head) as well as the master volume and the boost. Set everything at around 12 o'clock when you first set everything up, it'll give you a chance to hear the volume levels and give you a place to start shaping your tone.

BTW I'll subscribe so if you've got any questions feel free to ask, I've been using the rig for about two months so its still pretty new to me as well.

EDIT: Go for RMC audio, cool guys when I talked to them and it was a pretty easy transaction. Shipped fast and packaged really nice.
