Not to put it in a museum. I love the way it plays and sounds. Why would I want to get on stage without my favorite bass? It's insured, and if it gets dinged up a little from gigs, that's just player wear.
Plenty of people drive $40k cars to gigs and park them on the street FWIW. My bass comes inside with me and is never out of sight of me or my band.
A great bass should be shared with the world, not kept in a closet.

I got up to go get a soda and set my bass down under the drum riser (drum riser is on the bleachers, so bass was on a bleacher seat) before I got back they played a song and I came back to my bass having fallen due to vibrations from the drumset. I was sad for a minute, but it still works fine
Back when I used to club race Porsches (talk about a way to burn through money...), there were plenty of guys I know who bought a pristine old Porsche (mine was a '79 garage queen I eventually turned into a track ho) only to never drive it. They would wash and wax it, but were afraid to mess it up so it sat in the garage. Another friend of mine had perhaps the best advice I've heard on that topic:
"Are you saving it for the next owner?"
Like Gard said (wait, I'm agreeing with him?!?!?), the bass is a tool (like the car). Buy the one you like and use the crap out of it. If however it isn't a tool to you but rather a piece of art, then I guess hang it on the wall (or sit in the garage) and gaze lovingly at it. But realize that it wasn't really built for that purpose...

Most people own cars worth much more than $10K, and take them onto one of the most dangerous places imaginable...the public road system. I've got no more problem with driving my car down the road than I do gigging an "expensive" bass. Both are insured BTW, and at least I have my hands or eyes on my bass 99% of the time, unlike a vehicle left in a parking lot.
If my bass gets stolen or broken, its no different than if my car or house did, I'd suck it up and buy another. Don't be too attached to money. Use it wisely, but don't obsess over it. If a $5K plus custom bass is what you want, go for it. Any adult can sacrifice and save that amount if they truly want to (and most custom basses cost much less than that in reality). ASFAIK, you only get one go round, and if you really want a custom bass buy one! If not, that's OK too.
