Hi GregThe attachment piece mounted on the backrest is a piece of stamped steel with the top of it bent down over which prevents the backrest from lowering. Bend that up and it will fatigue with just a few bends and break off. Mine broke cleanly. That will allow the backrest to go as low as you would ever want. I bent the support arm forward as well. I now have good lumbar support.
Much of the squeek can be tamed by shimming and tightening the joints but whaddaya want for the price?![]()
I finally got fed up with the useless backrest and decided that if I break it , it's no less useful then with it in the reclining position that it comes in.
I took it off, put it in a vice and gave it a few tugs being carful not to use too much force. It took three small bends to get it right. I now have a nice backrest that gives support but lets me sit up straight.
