Double Bass Azola EUBs Megathread

Very saddened to hear the news, I purchased my lighting bug off the Azolas in 2008, both Seve & Jill were absolutley fantastic throughout the transaction...

For those that have never played an Azola, these are the best sounding EUB's on the market...

The Azola's will be sadly missed... best wishes to them from the Irish bass playing community!

My Acoustic Baby Bass came with Spiro Weichs, and I think they've been on there since Steve made the Bass (serial #1).

My Ampeg Baby Bass has Spiro Solos, tuned down to EADG, and for Salsa, this was always the ticket.

In general, I'd say the Solos are softer (almost rubber bands) and warmer, while the Weichs are still low tension but somewhat firmer and brighter.

I use Evah Pirazzi on my Uprights, and might try EP Weichs on the Azola at some point.

I think the Dominants would likely break quite fast at the tuners.
These strings are very sensitive to pliage, and if the metal part reaches the peg, they'll most probably break.
I broke many of them, and suggest you stay away from them.
Similar strings include Obligatos, Evah Pirazzis, Kolstein Heritages, Super-Sensitive Sensicores.

The Sensicores have been doing well for me over the past year, with both good thump and sustain. The do require a little tuning at the start of the night, but nothing major.

And yes, for full disclosure, I like them well enough to be an endorser. They cost a little less than most of the similar strings, too.

I heard from Jill and she states,

"Those strings on your new-to-you Baby (black silk at both ends) sound like they are probably the original LaBella RC610Ls that were our standard strings long, long ago. They are probably wwaayyyy dead by now : ) That bass should *really* come to life with a fresh set of strings. Be sure to get *true* 3/4 (NOT 4/4). tornadobass' advice is wise ... we love those strings he endorses, and had considered making them our standard string for guys who don't need to play with a bow."

She also provided some ideas about gig bag sources - will probably have to have one made.

For years, we (EA) shared a booth at NAMM with the Azola's. They are truly wonderful people and build some of the nicest instruments on the planet. I am honored to call them friends. This is sad news indeed. My solo rendition of "Over The Rainbow" is one of Jill's favorites and I would always play it for her at NAMM.

The state of our economy is putting a real strain on the business and people whose life is based on quality, inspiration and innovation. It puts a strain on those who choose to build quality products in the US as opposed to mass produced crap we find coming from China. It is our responsibility to look at each and every product we buy and see whose life we affect both positively and negatively.

Mike I worked with Steve and Jill four or five years ago as a helper and helped Steve build the Crown Royal bass. Steve and I would spend hours talking about gear and the quality being put out today by most bigger companies.. When I heard the very sad news of first Steve and Jill being no longer a team, and second hearing that Azola Basses is no longer I felt a very very deep sadness and almost came to tears. They were so good to me when I was helping out at the shop.. Hell I even house sat for them a few times. I wish both of them the best in thier new paths

Has anyone tried Velvet Garbos or Animas on his/her Azola - or any other EUB? They are expensive, and perhaps they are too long, looks like they are only available in 3/4-4/4 length.

The Garbos are often quoted in the Eminence EUB megathread, if that helps.

I picked up a used set of Garbos and just finished a second gig with them on the Acoustic Baby. They are indeed too long so the E and A strings have metal wrapped around the tuning pegs, I have my fingers crossed that they don't break. However, they sound and feel great.

Hello Just wanted to share some pics of My New Bambino, Recently arrived.

Mahogany/Ebony with Mambo Mute
Could not be happier with this bass, Jill was a pleasure to work with and Steve's work is beautiful.

Beautiful indeed! I'm jealous - I just missed having Steve make one similar to that for me. Let me know if you develop buyer's regret (not likely, I know). ;)
