I play bass guitar (31" shortscale) and am considering acquiring an UEB, too. I have narrowed my choice down the BSX Flip and the Azaro Gypsy. The cost is about the same. They can both be set up to be "walk away" instruments. The scale is the same (although, oddly for an EB player trying uprights, they are both longer than I am used to!). I have played neither. If there is anyone here who has pertinent information to add I would really be appreciative if they would do so.

Double Bass Azola Gypsy Compared With BSX Flip

I have an Azola Bug Bass II and previously owned a Gypsy and I loved it. I have not played or seen a BSX but the Azola basses are top quality and sound wonderful. I too went to the EUB from playing bass guitar and never would have thought that I would progress to the 41 inch scale but I have and it is great. So..imho... get the gypsy!
If you're located near San Diego, check out the hollow body Gypsy at Azola's workshop. They're settling back in from the recent fires, so I'd call first.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I have exchanged emails with Jill at Azola. Seems they are leaning toward the hollow body Gypsy as their flag bearer. It does cost more than the regular Gypsy but comes with choice of color and upgraded fingerboard so some of the extra cost can be rationalized away. Sometime soon, I may just hop on the old FJR1300, ride down there, and talk bass and motorcycles with them. In the meanwhile I think I will try to find some UEB or another to play. If I remember correctly, I saw one at (gasp!) GC a month or so ago but now I am in much better shape to understand what it is I am seeing (if they still have one).
Any luck with this? Those Gypsy basses look schweet.
I'd also consider an NS 5 string Cello in the "short scale" EUB dept. It has EMGs!
I plan to visit Dino in Pgh in a few months to try one of those Flip basses too.
