B string on a 4 string bass???

I have tried 5 string basses several times but I just can't get used to the extra string... but I would like to be able to get those lower notes from time to time. I was wondering if I could string up a four with B-E-A-D and lose the G string. I was mostly wondering if the B string would put too much pressure on a neck designed for lighter string guages. I'm really considering doing this on an cheap bass as an experiment and would like to hear from any bass builders out there to know if this would work

Nope, normally, a 4 string neck can handle a BEAD tuning just fine..
You might have to make some trussrod adjustments though..
And as gooey said, you'll have to file the nut down so the thicker strings will fit..
Then, you probably have to make some adjustments to your bridge.. (setting action & intonation)
I did it with a yamaha rbx370 once, didn't play bad at all, though I kind of mist that "G"..

The only downside could be that the low-B might sound a little floppy.. But that just depends on the bass..
