Actually, I've been a member for 7 months now, but I just rented a double bass this weekend so now I'm official. My name is Ryan Jacobs (hence my oh-so-creative handle), I've been playing piano since I was 6 years old and saxophone since I was 12 or so. My background is in both jazz and legit music - I studied composition at UCSD. My senior year, I got an acoustic guitar and learned to play that, but it wasn't big enough so I recently decided to learn bass.
I also used to play in a rock band called "The Drinks." We made a CD that is very good. We're on the internets, you may be able to find us.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my post about places to rent - I took your advice and checked out some stores and ended up renting an Englehardt ES-1 from Best Music Co. in Oakland. I also ordered a German bow from "Bob." I'll be taking lessons starting at the end of October.
