Is the distance between the notes the same as a "normal" 3/4 double bass?
How about thumb position? Do you use it or does your hand stay like in the lower positions once you have passed the octave?

Luckily, my Ampeg and my DB both have a 41.5 inch string length. However, I've played other BBs that have different string lengths and there isn't really a "standard" string length for double basses. If you measure your DB from the bridge to the nut, you can ask the builders and compare. As far as thumb position, I use the Ampeg for salsa gigs and rarely go up there. If you're looking for a more traditional upright tone, I would recommend a wooden bridge and a piezo pickup. What are your tonal goals with the bass and what style will you be playing?

My tonal goal is to get as close to an original (old-school, gut string) double bass sound as possible.
I'll be playing Chicago blues, Swing and Traditional Jazz (new orleans style).

I second Ramirez. There is a waiting period, but the end result is worth it. In the pic is an Azola Ampeg reissue, mid 90s, Ramirez Carribean Elite , and 1966 Ampeg. The RR walked all over the other two.

I have an original 60s Ampeg BB and have gone the wooden bridge and Shadow SH950 dual wing pickup route. Sounds much more like a DB than the deeper bass of the stock diaphragm pickup so I now have the choice of two sounds.

This guy is making some phenomenal replicas with the same body material as the original Ampegs were made and he winds his own pickups. The real deal right here and at $1500 for a brand new bass made to your liking isn't to shabby either...
