Baby Sumo

Agreed. I use my Baby Sumo to drive my 600w. Barefaced Super Compact 1x12 all the time, without problem. Same with my 1000w Sumo.
Nice. My 1000w shipped 12/30, arriving tommorrow 1/4. :hyper: It will be powering my Super Compact or Super Twin, with a Trickfish minnow and sushibox pedals in front. Seems like a perfect match.

I thought my GSS "monster" amp was clean but I upgraded my speaker to a Barefaced Big Baby III and now am noticing a bunch more noise from the amp. It is pretty much unusable with the tweeter on sadly... Back to my ancient but trusty Walter Woods. I should have bought a Jule Amps M700.

So this was priced well for a power amp but it was really expensive for the paper weight it has turned out to be best used for.

This amp is not a good tool for someone who is gigging a lot. Lesson learned.

I too would be interested in hearing the response from GSS on the issue.

I just ordered a 1000W Sumo two days ago. I requested a power-on LED and clipping LED to be added to the front panel. My request was granted at no additional charge, which was nice!

This will be ran as: Bass > Hyper Luminal > Quad Cortex > Monique > Sumo > Cab. Hoping for a good experience.

So, what was the answer from GSS ?

"Just use it as a paper weight" ? :)

We've been back and forth a bit but I think the noise I am experiencing is within the normal range in GSS' opinion. The last few emails haven't gotten a response. It's hard to know what to do -- before I used a speaker with a tweeter I didn't notice it. (No, it's not the tweeter because it goes away with a different amp using the same instrument, cables, power outlet.) I often play jazz where this kind of noise is definitely noticed... I am back to using my trusty 30+ Walter Woods as a power amp.

FYI, I watched video you linked above, and did not hear any noise.
It is high pitched. Not to throw shade but if you have been spending next to a ride cymbal without ear plugs, you definitely won't hear it. My hearing isn't so good above 1400 but still I definitely hear it and it is driving me nuts.

You can hear it go in and out as I change the volume on my tweeter. Before I upgraded my speaker I never heard it. Perhaps on most traditional bass cabinets you would never hear it, but with the tweeter I definitely do and I definitely like the way the Barefaced BBIII sounds. If I wasn't playing the type of music I do I may never have noticed, but got complaints from a couple audience members so back came the Walter Woods. (Even though it seems a little silly to be using the Walter Wood as a power amp...)

I am not trying to do anything here other than document my experience for anyone who is interested. When I looked, there wasn't much experience from people who were playing out a lot with one of these so I took a risk. Now I know as a double bass player who gigs a lot, this power amp doesn't cut it for me. I should have paid the extra money for something else. Other's experiences may vary. This could be the perfect amp others; I'll let them decide that.

I'd be happy to sell it at a substantial discount to anyone who is interested in one.

With headphones on and the volume maxed, I can barely hear something that sounds sort of like whooshing air with a slightly modulated whistle centered around 1135hz. I can hear 1135hz just fine, but it is very faint in the video. This sound is present from the beginning of the video. The sound fades in and out as you move the camera around, but does not change as you flick switches and fiddle with the cords.

I honestly can't tell if this sound is what you are talking about or not. I assumed it was from this object:

You can check the frequency here: Online Tone Generator - generate pure tones of any frequency (szynalski.com) If it's not around 1135hz, then identify the correct frequency.

Sorry but the video is awful. Maybe GSS would be more responsive if you made a better video. If the noise is coming from the tweeter, then aim the camera to focus on the amp and tweeter. Turn the amp on and off and make sure you can here the sound start and stop. Demonstrate if the problem stays constant or varies with the volume control.

If the problem is coming from the amp, it should occur with nothing plugged in.

If the problem only occurs when you plug your other gear in, then I would suspect the other gear.

Good luck!

Wasnex,

I envy the time you have on your hands.

The sound goes away when I use another power amp with the same cables / instrument / pre-amp. Here is a video I made right after using my Walter woods as a power amp that I shared with GSS. Totally silent.

Yes the same noise is present with just the GSS power amp and nothing else plugged in. Yes, the noise may be well within "normal" operating specs for these amps. It might not bother someone else. Maybe one of them wants to buy this amp from me? I definitely have no more time to waste on this.

I hear the same exact 1135hz warble in this video....so I guess that is not the problem you are referring to.

My point is not that the noise is not there, only that the video does not appear to do a good job of demonstrating the noise. But if you have no more time to waste, then I will not put further effort into trying to help you.
