Thoughts on backup basses? Always have one at a gig. Always. I was in the situation of a failed bass at a gig with no backup once. Never again. Nothing looks more unprofessional.
For many years my main bass was my black '81 P and my backup was my blue Japanese mid-80s PJ (see avatar). Those were the only two electric basses I owned.
Now I have enough basses to be considered a collection and my main bass is whatever works best for the date. The backup is pretty much whatever is nearest to hand. I am in the market for a specific backup. I just took a well paying gig that requires a 5 string and I only have one. I'm looking at some of the lower end Ibanez 5ers. Surprisingly good for the money.
