Backup bass, what's your idea?

A back up Bass?? Mandatory for me!! If any problem occurs, you ruin the show. And when you hit big stages it's the worst thing that could happen to you. In my case, two Fender US Deluxe V:

Metal/original music gigs;
Main: USA Spector NS-4
Backup: USA Spector NS-2
Rock/cover gigs;
Main: Ric 4003
Backup: Fender Jazz or Fender Precision
If we're sharing the bill with other bands, I'll bring 2 basses.
If we're the only band on the ticket, I'll bring up to 4 basses.

Depends what you mean by backup.
My go to bass is my Warwick Streamer Stage 1.
Next go to bass is my Warwick Corvette Std.
If I am in the studio, or playing a nice show with a lockable/secure green room then I will play the Stage One and the Corvette will be the back up. However I'm not going to bring the Stage 1 to some sticky dive bar, so in that case the Corvette is the playing bass and my Warwick Streamer Std is the backup.

If I am playing in some places at night that are a little bit sketchy or where I know I will be separated from my gear, I'll take my Brian Moore i2000. These basses are hand crafted in Korea and you can feel the quality. I don't feel like I am sacrificing the tone or feel... and you can find them used for about $500...

My main bass is a 98' Ken Smith burner.
My backup is a 04' PJ i build with a luthier. I always carry a backup to gig or far rehearsal.
It's a peace of mind question. One day the burner upper strap button felt off the bass: screw broken. I was happy to have my backup.
I also have a 96' squier jazzbass and a 13' Fender acoustic bass. I use my backup, the squier and the acoustic bass at home to work, and my KS only on rehearsals, gig, recording.

The 4+1 has something a bit special tone wise over the five in line. And I'm not the only one who says so.
Unlikely I will sell it, but I'll keep that in mind. My wife told me two basses ago I was not allowed to sell any basses. She didn't say I wasn't allowed to buy any.If you ever decide to sell it, I'm your man.
I have a Mono M80 dual case, so I typically have a spare bass with me for gigs. I usually go fretted/fretless. Sometimes it's active/passive. Sometimes it's 4-string/5-string. If I'm feeling old-school it's Precision/Jazz. If I'm feeling really old-school it's Precision-with-flats/Precision-with-rounds
I don't have an official backup. I just always bring two basses, so whichever one I'm not playing is the backup.
For a couple of years, I used a modded MIM Jazz as a backup. It was great for that purpose, but I never used it, so it was just taking up space.
I have been considering a second fiver, either passive or with a passive mode, that could serve as a backup to my current five (M-2500) and all my fours, but I don't play out often enough these days to need one.

my rig is always next to the drummer on the hi-hat side (looks like you do the same).......i feel i lock the best this way, especially if working with different drummers or as a hired gun (and especially on big stages), but id be asking if i could have some mileage between myself and that guitar rig...his setup looks way to much in my territory lol

I don't have a backup bass as such.
I'll buy a new bass if I think the sound is what I want. That one usually become my go-to bass. The old go-to bass gets relegated to non-go-to status, but can still be gigged if I feel like it.
So I have more than 1 bass, 1 go-to and some reserves but no backups. Not splitting hairs, really!

Hey Dav, are you sure you heard that right? In my time here on TB I've never seen THAT said!
True story, I promise. It was when I brought the G&L SB-2T home. I told her I was going to sell my AM J to offset the expense because I didn't play it that much any more. She said that was her favorite and that she didn't want me to sell it. Then she said don't sell any basses, you always regret it. So I agreed. I have bought one since then.
