Well, now I feel guilty, but I'm glad I got it. It is one nice bass. It displaced the P Select as my favorite.

Backup bass, what's your idea?

My main bass for the last 19 years has been an MIA , '98 Fender Jazz. The closest I could get to it after trying out many different Jazz basses, is a Fender Road Worn Jazz, which I use as a back up/ rehearsal bass. It doesn't look anything like my '98, but, feel, balance, tone, and playability is pretty darn close.
Where is you Fender P/J you love so much? Not being smart ass here, did you sour on it?
Main and backup.
My main bass is a '74 Gibson Ripper.
My backup for it is an '82 Gibson Ripper.
My alternate backup is a Peavey T-20.
That said, I'll match my instrument to the genre or style as required. So even though the above are what I consider to be my main and backup basses, it's not always what I'll bring along to play.

My No. 1 is an Alembic Elan Six with a walnut top. My backup is a Alembic Elan Six with a maple top. The two are the same age. The maple top bass is rarely used but goes out to most gigs. The walnut top goes to every gig, everywhere, every time, so it is heavily used.

My idea of a backup is an inexpensive (if necessary) bass that also plays well and sounds good. It doesn't have to be the same, but should fit the music just as well.
In my case, usually #1 is a Lakland DJ5 with rounds, and backup is a parts J with flats. They are both good enough to be #1 though.

I don't have back up basses. But "My idea of back up bass" is having one almost exactly like the main bass.
For example,
MusicMan Stingray, and Sterling Ray34
G&L L2000, and G&L Tribute L2000
Lakland 55-94, and Lakland Skyline 44-02
Gibson Firebird, and Epiphone Firebird
Warwick Corvette, and Warwick Rockbass Corvette

My idea when the backup stays in the van is one of my SX Fender clone passive 5 or 6 stringers. This is the backup regardless of which main axe is being used for gig (a 6 string main bass usually would put 6 string SX Fender clone in van). Idea is in case of dire failure, band takes break and you sprint to van for back up.
My idea when backup is actually on stage is a fretted-fretless pair. These days typically a pair of blueburst G&L L2500 basses. In 6 string mode it is commonly my Alembic fretless 6 and my Modulus Q6. Idea here is be able to switch between fretted and fretless depending on song, but in the event of dire failure either one can do a passable job for the other.

My nº 1 is my Epiphone Thunderbird Classic Pro IV. I use it once a week at rehearsals, occasionally at gigs and extra-rehearsals when a gig is close in time.
My nº 2 is my Fender Duff McKagan signature. I use it about 3/4 days a week, for home practising.
I am planning on widen my collection, so I would be able to have other bass with different tunning right on hand and not needing to play too much with the tuners on my basses.

I always bring two basses and play whichever one I want when I get to the gig. Lately I've been bringing an American Hotrod P bass with flats as main and a Ric 4001 with round wounds as back up, I'll occasionally bring my EB-3 with flats as back up. I'll also sometimes play one bass for one set and another for another set. I haven't had a problem with a bass that i can remember since about 1975-76 when I broke my A string on my Tele bass in the middle of a Who set in which every tune ran into the other, now THAT was a problem. It was an important showcase for something or other.

I bring an American Fender Jazz and American Fender Precision to every gig. I play the Jazz most of the night and use the Precision on a couple of songs. I've never really consider either of them to be a backup bass nor have I ever had the need for one, but I suppose if there was ever a need for a backup, I would be all set.
I don't have a backup bass per se. My primary is a Fender 70's Hot Rod P/J that I use for E standard. I use a Fender American Custom Shop tuned to Eb and a Fender Custom Shop tuned to D.
Those 3 formats go to each show with me. I have 2 other Fender American Jazzes that rotate in and out occasionally. One is tuned to E and the other to Eb.
The E standards I use 45-100 strings and the Eb's I use 50-105. I never change tuning in any of them as they are set up specifically for their respective tuning and string gauge.

my backup is a fender JP-90 that has a lot of miles on it.
I don't really take it with me anywhere, usually only carry 1 bass, and right now that is the CIJ 63 RI Jazz bass.
