Bad Pickups???

OK thanks

I know a lot of EMG are lower output designed to be run through a preamp. The lower output keeps them from distorting.

"usual" EMGs are very very very low output because they have a much smaller number of windings, and they have a preamp to boost the signal incorporated into the pickup casing: they only really work when powered, their output is too low without a battery. Those are what people generally called 'active pickups' proper, although in reality they're much the same design as a standard passive pickup .
