bad reports?

well i just try the jack bruce thing, where he does get busier during the guitar solos, and it works..i try to be slightly busier and still be under the solo...it just really surprised me that one of the nights where i play less and not so wanky i get complained that im too busy?

and those tracks where all you can pretty much hear is me is because i used the mic on my laptop, which i have either on top of my amp or next to it for the setlist and i use for break music too

Lets assume for a sec that your band did play a good set. In that case I have to ask if you or any of your band may have happened to flirt with someone who may have been the wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, sister, daughter etc. of either the Dj or the venue owner. Sometimes these things happen without us knowing it and set off a chain reaction.

Of course IMO it never hurts to sit with criticism a bit and then decide what one feels may be relevant and useful to take to heart.

Peace,
S

Heath, try to take things that members here say in a light hearted manner. Sometimes a little playful razzing will help point you in the right direction.

For everyone else, lets please keep the mean comments that may offend Heath to a minimum. I'll keep this thread open for now.

Thanks

P.S. Ignore Marks comment. He speaks in tounges. ;)

During a guitar solo is the last place you want to go wanking on.

That's a big +1. Maybe, just maybe Jack got away with it but sometimes I wonder how much better Cream would have been if he would have just shut up and held a great groove for Eric.

Additionally, a bass solo has never and will never be a replacement for a guitar solo. I wish that where not the case but people are just too habitualized to the squeeky stuff.

IMO of course.

fair enough, but i mean, its better than just sitting there playing a verse part looking at each other...

oh and sorry if i sound a bit, snobby, ****ty or whatever, theres just alot going on right now, and working 3 jobs certanly aint helping

The problem with asking people for an opinion on something as personal as your playing is that they spend 30 seconds giving you something off the top of their heads and you spend hours analysing why you suck!:D

I'm a bit of a shredder who became a groove player as I got older. I think theres a time and place for both but I really enjoy doing subtle things with a few notes now. I started to mellow when, in one band, I had learnt the songs I was playing to a point where I could switch autopilot on and listen to the rest of the band in rehearsals. I now try to feed off what the guys in my band are doing, lock the groove and pick my spots.

I really don't want to say one way is better than the other. The great thing about developing your chops is you know they are there if you need them. The down side to playing groove is that some dufus can play root notes with no skill and some people can't tell the difference.

From a pure ego point of view, I try really hard to dig what I'm playing personally. From an even bigger ego point of view, I only ask someone about my playing when I really care about what that individual has to tell me.:D

One thing that I've found out in my many decades of playing is, if you are any good, you will be playing in bands (maybe even the same band) for a long time. Clubs and club managers come and go.
There have been a few club Owners/managers that bitched and moaned about this and that. Usually they wanted us to play for less money so they could stick the extra profit up their noses. I'm still playing and my band is still playing. Alot of those music "expert" club owners/managers are long gone.

99 of 100 times you are better to groove than wank.

tell that to stuart hamm :D
Hamm already knows this. I've seen him a couple of times with Satriani, and he was Mr. Support Player. Only during his solo spots did he do any flashy stuff.
Then I went to the Bx3 show, and he was wanking away like crazy. But that's what the Bx3 shows were supposed to be, a wankfest.
You gotta pick your spots. Guys who are good at that, like Stu, get gigs like Satch's.
