i never saw any point in those "monorail" bridge things, except that each one is firmly screwed into the body and won't move around. if it were a row of saddles firmly locked to a metal bridgeplate i don't see how it would be any different. (the technobabble is about reducing string "crosstalk", but how often do you play one string while letting the others ring freely?)

as for the fender saddles, it's the difference between this (note the separated G saddle; push it back in place and the string will just force it apart again):

and this (string-through, but the principle of multi-grooved saddles and a wider string spread pulling the saddles together retains):

Ah, i understand now. The first pic is "awfull". I got the stock fender bridge but never got in that way. That looks like a loosen saddle. I always wonder why they dont just make grooves at the base plate, like that:

Just get some metal files from a hardware store and go to town, I found mine in the 'chainsaw sharpening' files section, there were many different shapes in a pack, all very small and perfect for this job (under $10 too). Just take your time and measure measure measure.

that saddle is not loosened; the string pulls it that way regardless.

as for grooves in the plate, the new ones do that now.
