How feasible would it be to cut slots on the top of the bridge so I can just lay the string in it and tune?
Good point. Just be aware of the "break angle" over the saddles. Pressure over the saddle decreases and you could be left with a bass that does nothing but buzz.The only thing I'd worry about is the stress raiser(s) you've created by removing that material above the hole. That's not to say it wouldn't work, but proceed with caution.
(BTW, how often do you change your strings? I can see it if you're changing them every couple of weeks, but bass strings for me last a long time. Feeding them through every now and then just isn't a biggie).
