So my friend works for the local trash guys and acquired a 4 string badass 2 bridge and passed it on to me. I do have a project that needs a bridge, my question is are they worth the hype, or should I toss it on rev/bay and use the money to get a more standard bridge and keep the change...

I have one on one of my basses but only to cover up a rout patch that a standard Fender bridge won't cover. It does it's job but I don't know about being worth the "hype". If you've never considered getting one before now you should probably just sell it.
If it’s free and works with the project you’re assembling there’s no reason to not use it.

I've had an 80s parts Fender since about 1983. Like many from the era, it had a BadAssII bridge. A few years ago, I switched to a bent plate. Other than being a little lighter, there was no difference. But other people swear by them. I've also never understood to desire for infinite sustain on a bass guitar.

There was a time I loved them and swapped many bridges for one. My latest build I could have had any bridge but I went with a bent plate. They are mostly a cosmetic thing...use it if you like it.
I was looking at it, but I think it is rather crappy look when the string balls are exposed like that. Especially if they are colored.. looks like some bubble gum stuck behind the bridge. It is kind of ok in the .minimalist traditional bend plate, but go out to make a fancy bridge in leave that balls hanging, is kind of not comme il faut. I think there are better looking bridges out there, such as KickAss or even the Guyker for $24. I would sell it to the ones that willing to pay for a good bass folklore story.
IMO as long as a bridge has the necessary adjustments and is stable, a bridge is a bridge. You have an expensive bridge that'll do the job of a $20 one. Sell it, get the $20 one, and keep the change. You may disappoint your buddy though; is that a consideration?.
