badass vs babicz bridges

Your right it was tungsten. The dead spot was very present before the procedure and afterward I couldn't hear the dead spot so in my opinion it was cured whether or not scientifically it was fixed that could be up for debate.
I suppose sometimes this can work. I tried a temporary version on my G&L SB1 by applying stick - on lead weights meant for balancing model airplanes. The bass has an extreme dead spot at D on the G string. Every other note rings perfectly. In my case adding weight just spread it to the C# as well as the D. Adding more put it squarely on the C# alone and at that point (nearly two ounces) the weight noticeably created imbalance so I gave up.
 
You are giving the bridge to much credit for its role in the sound of a bass.
True dat.

Pups are a much more effective way to get a thicker, fuller sound. I like the babicz because it does not depend on string pressure to maintain it's adjustment, it's pretty much set and forget, and no sliding bridge saddles when my kung fu death grip kicks in.
 
Does the physical size of the bridge footprint, contact area between body and bridge, come into play here?

Reason I'm asking is if memory serves the babicz has a larger contact area than either the BA or stock L plate.
Yes. At least in theory. The larger footprint area means that there is a lot more mass absorbing energy. It works contrary to what many people think. The thought is that the larger the "transfer area" the better the energy transfer will be. That's not the case. The larger the area, the more energy loss there will be in exciting the mass that is making contact, and thus the less energy there will be to transfer elsewhere. If you want to efficiently transfer energy, you want to reduce the mass of everything between the source of the vibration and the point where you want the energy to be delivered. So a low mass bridge is in order if you are looking to take advantage of the resonance of the body in contouring the sound.
